John Branca back on top in 1957 baseball!

It appears John Branca has just obtained many 1957 Topps baseball cards (PSA 9's and 10's) from Nick (K) Romano, the former leader, and has emerged back on top in the Registry. Romano's set has disappeared from the current greatest and remains only in the all-time greatest.

I think John does a lot of good for the hobby. He is generally of the mentality that when he wants to build something -- he wants to build the best, and will go to great lengths to ensure he meets that goal.

I certainly would never want to be in competition against him. But he enables long-term collectors to (typically) cash out at a substantial return, allowing them to pursue other collecting goals. John's meteoric rise in the PSA Set Registry, over a few short years, is pretty astounding. He has an amazing run of 9s and 10s in every set that he collects. It probably wasn't a hard decision for Nick -- he was basically done with his set, had an amazing set, and didn't have too much $$$ incentive to compete with John long-term.

Nick Romano is a nice guy -- I always enjoyed speaking with him. I only decided to part with my Phillies PSA 9 cards from that year when I saw that John starting buying up the cards prodigously. Though he did not win any of my auctions specifically, his influence helped me achieve nice returns on those cards I sold.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I guess Hollywood triumphs over Wall Street.

Seriously, in a short time John Branca has risen to be a serious challenger To Marshall, Charlie and Don as having the top sportscard collection in the hobby.

Should he continue at the pace he has for another 3-4 years he may ultimately have the best collection.

I have sold a few cards over the past couple of years to John at some big prices.

Congratulations John(although I am sure he never will read this).

John was certainly a good buyer from me and a decent guy to deal with. His spies will read this thread and pass on the information, so he'll get the gist of what everyone says, Jim. He probably won't be getting much more card-buying money from Michael Jackson in the future, though.

Strange how Romano built such a great set then unloaded it right after the awards. And why didn't he ever complete the set with a PSA 8 or 9 Bunning?

Always looking for 1957 Topps BB in PSA 9!
  • Frank,

Nick was looking for a PSA 9 Bunning for a long time and just couldn't find one. I haven't seen a Bunning 9 offered publicly in almost 3 years.

Buying 1957 Baseball PSA 8 or higher. Especially Checklists, and Contest Cards. Topps1957psa8set@aol.com
  • Upon further review, I think John Branca didn't just buy the cards he needed from Romano but in fact purchased the entire set from him. I say this because there were a ton of PSA 8's that were changed. John compared each card in the two sets and picked the best one. Right now all (but one) of the red change blocks are deleted since it's been over five days.

I wonder if/when we'll see a ton of 1957's hit the market? I think it would be better to sell individually than as a set.
