What do you do when you get bored......

Many of us on the board know that it is a long road to completing a set in any grade. I was just wondering what some of you do when you get bored of the chase (whether is be frustration, or lack of funds, or whatever). What do you do to psych yourself up again to get back into it? Do you take time off? Focus on upgrades?

I wanted to knoe cause I'm starting to feel that way.
Thanks.
Carlo

  • Focusing on upgrades hasn't really helped me. Lack of funds (purchase of a home recently) has curbed my interest as well.

Spending less time on ebay and more time on the golf course has helped my handicap though! image .. oh yeah, and my wife is probably happier I'm not sitting in front of the computer checking auctions every single day... (and thank goodness for sniping programs... no more days of furiously clicking bids at the end of auctions at 1am in the morning!.. or rescheduling dinners to place bids at the last minute if necessary!)
  • Here are my suggestions:

    (1) Get a life...I tried it but it didn't work for me so I'm back
    (2) Get a dog
    (3) Drink more often
    (4) Get a girlfriend..... or boyfriend if that's your style (not that there's anything wrong with it image )
    (5) Sell your entire collection to me for 10% of SMR
There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness"

I then spend time w/ my wife and learn to appreciate being w/ cards all the more, and then the boredom disappears. image

I'm currently working on about 6 graded sets, some I'm almost complete ('60 Flr baseball 94.94%), some I am complete except for a few upgrades ('60 Topps football), and to pass the time I just started a new set the '55 Bowman baseball. I have about 20%, so I need a ton of cards and theres plenty to pick at, so that keeps me busy. When I hit 75+% I'm sure adding new ones may be tough, so I'll probably start another set like the '53 Bowman color or B&W baseballs, or 1948 Leaf football or...image ...jay

When I get bored...I usually sell and reinvest in another registered set. Keeps things fresh.

  • Actually, I have found that drinking and Ebay is not a good mix--too slow on the snipe and too much "I bought what?"

I've been a type collector for a few years now because of the problem you mentioned. I got stuck on a 1961 Topps BB set for the longest time-- STILL looking for a true nm-mt Joe Gibbon and some upgrades--before Ebay. When the set registry came, I pretty much gave up,since I have no desire to have the nicest, just all 8s would be fine. I mean seriously, when I see that PSA 10 Koufax/Drysdale card go for something like $2800.00, I ask myself would I rather have this weak 9 called a 10, or 7-10 nm hall of famers from the 1916 m101 sets. You know, a 1961 combo card or a near mint: Bender, Wheat, Carey, Collins, Huggins Rixey AND Roush. Of course, i still dream of that Gibbon in true 8, graded or not, at each and every show I attend.

Seriously, I always recommend a type set of one kind or another to keep things fresh, because there really are no rules-favorite team, player, alma mater-- you can always find something, you learn alot more about cards and baseball. Or else think about starting a new small set of under 50 or 100 cards.

Or just wait for the boredom to pass and enjoy what you have-- it's all good. image

    So was this you, Curmudgeon?

When I get bored with my main set (75T), I think about taking on something with a bigger hobby profile. Sometimes I almost convince myself I could complete a T206 set in PSA 4-5, with the big exceptions. Or a 52T in 6. Or 53B or 57T or 65T Embossed or 64T Coins or 5x Red Mans or Mars Attacks or 34G or 33G or Tatoo Orbits or a complete run of Cerebus in CGC 9.8. Sometimes I buy a card or two or eight from that set, then settle back to earth. Then I go play with my Xbox and try once and for all to get serious about starting a franchise on All-Star Baseball. By that time my enthusiasm for the garish borders returns. These cycles usually coincide with a dearth of stuff I need on ebay.

PS, I already have a dog and am tired of women for the time being. They are weird.
