Slater's gypsy sale

Sheez..... got the catalogue today. What a curiosity collection of items.
If I remember right, several folks had problems with shipping from this place, what with the 15% on top of it, who's excited about anything they see in this auction?

Very disorganized catalog. A female's KKK outfit? I have nothing good to say about Slater's.
    Frank

Always looking for 1957 Topps BB in PSA 9!
  • I got a letter from them, basically saying "we sent you a catalog last time and you didn't bid - we're not going to send you one again unless you fully register for our auction and provide references."

I get lots of auction catalogs, and I sometimes don't bid in them. I've never gotten a pissed off letter basically complaining to me that they wasted money in sending me a catalog.

Well, if you wonder where the "trash" is for all the stuff Mastro gets...
  • Slater's got started as a strictly political items dealer and only recently have expanded into everything else. Personally, I'm saving my $ for Mastro and maybe a couple of Superior items tomorrow night. It's a free market and they are of course welcome to jump into this stuff, but between Mastro, Superior, and all the other similar auctions, I really think the "market" is getting a little saturated...

BTW - I was borderline on keeping their catalog until I saw the KKK outfit and then it was trash time.
  • I know slater has been dealing in sports for at least 10 years, under The Political Gallery and later Slater's Americana. He had some neat items from time to time - I remember some T200 Premiums I liked - but would always have some convoluted way of auctioning the items. First "estimates" with reserves that they wouldn't tell you about (because the items just started at those prices - obvious because they were in the next auction too!), then he tried min bids, but the KKK outfit is appropriate because his terms and conditions always made me feel like I was in Nazi Germany.

With Sportscardsplus auction ending yesterday, Superior's tomorrow and Lelands and Mastro's big auctions in the next month, it's not exactly like there's a shortage of places to spend your money. I'd throw in some bids, if I didn't feel like they were being nice to allow me the opportunity to view their tremendous gathering of junk.

I received that letter also and sent back that I wanted to receive the catalog. They are very disorganized and their proof reader is worse than mile high. CAN'T WAIT TO GET MY MASTRO CATALOG I am surprised that mastro doesn't require more from them in terms of professionalism since they are in essence sponsoring them by giving them their customer list to send catalogs toimage

    Very confusing.

I received my catalog in the mail yesterday. I have never received a catalog from them before....yet it was sent to my new address (I just moved). Anyways, I go to their website and it looks just like Mastros! So I give them a call and they explained to me that they use the same auction software company but they are not financially affliated with Mastro. I asked how I received their catalog and they said admitted that they share information with Mastro.

The lady mentioned that I needed to register again with them in order to receive catalogs in the future. I mentioned to her that I was concerned that this looks like Mastros site and they wanted my credit card info. She told me that I did not need to fill out the credit card info as they "dont look at it". Well, I tried to register and it will not let me unless I provide the a CC number.

Question to the board....is everthing on the up and up with this firm? Have any of you guys bought from them before?

    Any help would be appreciated!
  • I have bought some political items in the past from their newsletters (I am an APIC member and thus am on their mailing list) and never had a problem, but that's a fixed price affair and have never bought auction items before.

I had good luck with them when they were Slater's Americana about 5 or 6 years ago. They always offered neat stuff with reasonable reserves. What I liked best was that they would sell individual cards instead of putting them in a group lot and having them go for thousands of dollars.
I won one lot in their last auction and was happy with the service. However, I read all of the complaints on this board and I believe the Network 54 board after their last auction so I would be a little concerned.
I have yet to receive the catalogue for this sale but if they had any 19th century material that I was interested in I would probably still put in a bid.

This was discussed a little after their last auction. They are a alegit outfit but some other board members had complained that the shipping was really slow and they were waiting on items. I have never bought from them but received the catalog last auctions tating it was a complimentary copy from being registered with mastro. they have smaller $$ lots which are not what mastro looks for so I believe thats why mastro provided the mailing info.

BEEFCAKE - I got this letter too! And i also didn't like the tone of it. I guess I'll stick w/ my accounts w/ Mastro. LeLands, Gray Flannel & Superior...jay

I feel like royalty...having just driven over the catalog that FedEx Ground left in my driveway.

I had to laugh at the irony........ and the match-up of 2 truly incompetent outfits.

    But wait,

........What do I see but the long sought after Bobby Murcer game used bat.
Now all I have to do is outbid Upper Deck and those other monsters who want to chop it into little pieces.

murcerfan - if you're looking for game-used bats, look at American Memorabilia as well. [I know, I know, it's Murcer you care about, not equipment generally.] They have several dozen pieces worth drooling over in each auction. So does Grey Flannel, but their auction just ended.
