Thanks Placid but mine has a very clearly repunched 8 and a lightly repunched 1. I wish AOL would figure out the problem. mike
    • I believe there are several varieties of 1844 cents that have repunching on the date. I'm at work now but I'll try to check when I get off in a couple hours.

i have an 1851 large cent that might be the same type of error as your 1844. the date was punched in 180 degrees off, upside down, and then repunched correctly by---------none other than Longacre who was trying to crack the inner circle at the mid-1800's mint!!! mine might be a VF, but it's a cool coin just for the history.

    • Ok, of the seven business strike varieties of 1844, four of them have repunched dates. The image in the PM you sent was not clear or large enough to see the repunching but from something you said in the thread I believe you have a N-3 which is an R-2 coin (common). The repunching on the varieties are described as:

N-1 1 repunched with extentions to left and right of the base.

N-2 Entire date first punched in upside down then corrected to produce the 44/81 "overdate" Entire upside down date shows on early die states. In later states it shows best from the top of the first 4 to the crosslet.

N-3 18 repunched with outlines at lower left of both numerals.

N-5 44 repunched showing clearest attop left of first 4
