Bench master collectors

What's up with the latest additions to the set?I thought Master sets were supposed to be only throughout years played.

  • Johnny Bench played 110 games in 1983, thus, his 1984 issued cards are valid for the master set. I would question some of the weighting of this set, though.

There are cards well out of his career in the master set now.
  • Rob-

It must have been a temporary glitch, since it looks fine now.
  • hi, i`m the guy that listed those 3 psa-10 johnny bench cards. i`m new to the registry (not collecting) i never read anything that said you could not
use anything above 1984. gayle e-mailed me and told me they were coming off. but, suprise, she did say my 1973 topps candy lid psa-6 #30571979
would be added very soon ! thanks lee spies

There was a 1991 card listed and a 2003 card.
I didn't notice what you are talking about lee.

    Lee,you sound familiar.I think we've got a transaction or two on ebay.image
  • there was a (92-bench/morgan heros) (2001 topps arch. reserv.) ( 2001 topps chrome combos bench/griffey/larkin/morgan)
yes, i believe we have done some trading through e-bay.
i have been collecting bench for years, i have tons of oddball stuff of bench. what do you think of the 74- topps deckle edge psa-10 ?
i bought that on e-bay for around $46.00, i beleive. it was part of my collecters club submissions.
along with the 73- topps candy lid psa-6 (highest grade example) i hope i`m not causing too many waves in the bench registry, really !
  • First, welcome to the message board, Lee. Awesome score on the '74 Deckle Edge. If you ever need some quick cash, throw that on ebay - it should pull in 20 times what you paid for it. image

Now, let me get this straight - PSA added 1992 and 2001 cards to the Johnny Bench Master set? Lee, you should not be sorry for making waves, PSA should be more cautious when updating player sets. I thought every update had to go through Joe Orlando (at least I hope it does - I've been waiting several weeks for a few of them now).

Good luck with the Bench set. Let me know if you are looking for any Bench cards - I have some oddballs myself. I know I have a sweet 1981 Squirt Panel that hasn't been cut yet. Email me - jeb@virtualizard.com if you'd like.

    Jeb:

I don't think that set registry updated had to go through Joe Orlando. It doesn't seem to make too much sense in my eyes -- at least for relatively routine issues. If PSA grades the card (and to get an addition to the Registry, you need to provide a PSA serial number of the card), and it is within the player's years -- that is basically all that I think needs to be done for an addition. To me, that sounds like a relatively easy decision process that can be delegated to the excellent programming team at PSA -- even if they do not understand the intracacies of baseball cards.

Now -- there are some exceptions. For example, I am currently trying to determine, with the help of Joe, whether PSA will once again grade 1984 Topps Nestle cards -- and label them as handcut. As the cards were only available on sheets -- if the moniker "handcut" is added to the PSA flip -- I personally don't see why those can't be graded again. Much like Hostess and Post cards -- except it was a major dealer who had them sheet cut back in 1984. Might bring back some recognition to some PSA-graded examples I have from days of yore.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • talking about handcut cards, i submitted a johnny bench (numbered) #29 bazooka card handcut (by someone else) these are extremely rare.
although the cut could have been better, the card was returned to me holdered and marked authentic but no grade.they also returned my
1973 topps pin-up saying; not holdered, no holder available. this card is listed in the johnny bench master set, and pop. report lists a few.
this card is also very very hard to come by. here are 2 examples that could have really helped me climb that registry ladder, whats up psa ?

    Speeder:

For the Bazooka card, you should read PSA's policies on handcut cards closely. Without going into every last word of it here -- basically it goes like this: Unless every single border is cut outside the lines, PSA will only authenticate the card, and not grade it. If all the borders are cut outside the lines -- then they will assign it a grade. Even a little cut into the border will render the card authentic as opposed to grade.

As for the pin-ups, I don't know. You would probably need to contact Peter Ma on that one.

  • I want to thank Speeder for this thread because it reminded me to update my Bench basic and master sets, which I have not done for a while. I might have more updates later this week....image
  • thanks mikeschmidt, that resolves the bazooka question.
but i`m sorry i do not know who peter ma is ?
