61's---It's getting even more ridiculous

This bidder has won 4 cards so far tonight for over $450 each. All exept 1 are fairly high pop PSA 9 commons, and nno Yankees or Dodgers or specialty cards. The 8's for these cards go for under $20. I think people just keep bidding higher and higher to see how high he will go. The sellers have to be loving this.

  • Crazy, sad, funny, unbelievable, uneducated collector, this guy has a very serious problem.

When the guy Rocketslover or whatever his username was came around for a few months, he was the talk of the board. This guy is just as bad...

  • Same underbidder on last 3 did not look at others.Does he always bid this way as well?

  • Yes he does...but usually in the $300.00 range. He probably added another hundred to his bids tonight.

  • skinsfan: Good observation. However, All of the bids were snipes, so it was not a matter of changing a bid. 2nd bidder is no doubt just as frustrated, and just keeps bidding higher and higher each night when 9's come up.

It's an unfortunate situation. Someone with a lot of spare cash is putting together a popular set in PSA 9 to the frustration of other '61 collectors. The fact that he bids so high on some cards that he already has in PSA 9 is more disturbing. Time to send in those raw sets and get some more 9's in play.

He won a Duke Snider PSA 9 and PSA 10. Unbelievable. That's kinda funny that the PSA 9 isn't good enough to make it into his set. That guy has some serious cash to blow. I like it though, it's good for the market.
  • "it's good for the market."

Actually, it's terrible for the market. Remember the dot.com crash? Once the big money leaves the party, the rest of us sellers will suffer. And most buyers will be spooked by the carnage.

Undoubtedly the guy must've won a lottery, is laundering money or something similar, to overpay so often.

Unless, of course, he just has his sights set on the Set Registry Award winner at the top of the '61 heap. Buckwheat, are you worried?

  • I just found a pop report from 04/29/01. 1961 Topps

Check this out: (7's) 7,479....(8's) 11,278...(9's) 1,327 10's were not added to the pop report. Probably about 40-50 at the time.

    Grades 1-6 about 3,500 cards.

    Today: (7's) 20,000...(8's) 30,000...(9's) 3,254...(10's) 89.

    Grades 1-6 almost 12,000

All are NQ with the qualifiers total is over 70,000 today...

  • Not to stray from the topic, but that 10 is weak. The registration is off, to the point where the blue goes beyond the border by Drysdale so much the card looks diamond cut. And ol' Sad Sam Jones has a fish eye and otherprint defects around him. Yes I know the difficulty with this issue and print dots, but it seems to me that a 10 can have no such problems, and that this is yet another case of someone in prostrated awe to the almighty holder, rather than a keen evaluator of a mint card.

  • curmudgeon, I don't think your're off subject with your observations...you make a great point, this guy doesn't have a klue (like in K Kards) about collecting. The best example, IMO is him buying a psa 7 of Don Buddin. The seller advertised the card as a error card. All 1961 topps Buddin cards have him hitting 66 home runs in 1960. A non-corrected error on a card Isn't an erron. I think we all know this.
He paid 30-40 bucks for a 7-8 buck card. He didn't know.

With the amount he has paid for his set, he could have sent Mikeschmidt (Marc) and 10-20 other people through Harvard Business school for their MBA's. Maybe their PHD's.
