Canada 1859 Cent - warning big pics.

Could someone sort this coin out for me - I need to know exactly what I have. The 9 appears to be struck over another 9 which is offset to the right. This can sort of be seen in the images below. The under date is visible in two parts: bisecting the very bottom loop of the 9; and inside the full loop of the 9. I've left the pics big for obvious reasons.

Thanks in advance.

There are many, many 9/8 and double-punched varities of this Large Cent. Hard to tell from the scan which one it is.

It doesn't look like any of the major varieties listed in Charlton. Sorry I can't be of any help.

I don't recognize it either. It is definetly a narrow 9 variety. It could be a die defect in the lower loop. Can you post a sharper picture of the date area?

  • Thanks Gene - narrow 9.

In Krause it has Type 1 and Type II. Which is this? if it can't be shown in the scan how do I look for it?

Also I may not know about these but I know an overstrike when I see it and there is a number under the 9.

To me, it looks like the early form narrow 9.
