I like this RPD, but how was it made? The two impressions of the 1 repunched wide to the west are very squared off and look like dashes. The edge of the date punch could cause one impression like that but not two (?) There's also a small line sticking out from under the 8 (lower left). I see that same line in both Snow's and Steve/Flynn's photos in their books, but it's not mentioned.
In contrast to the crisp obverse, the reverse looks like it was struck through a blob of grease. The wreath is mush and the shield is slightly indented. Snow lists many reverse die states, from no die cracks to a crack that forms a retained cud at 8:30. This one appears to be stage A, free of cracks. Did this strike-through cause the deterioration of the die?
It's in an NGC 64RB holder. Looks like a spot was removed under the date, but it's still a nice die state of a rare variety. It's listed as R5 in Steve's book and 'very scarce' in Snow's recent attribution chapter.
