watch those pops!

I just received a card in the mail that had been advertised PSA 9 1/1. Before bidding, I checked the pop report and verified that there was only one 9. Then I put a very high snipe on it. I didn't bother to check my collection to see if I already had the card. If only one exists, I must not have it yet, right?

So I won the card. Today, though, when I went to add the card to my registry, I found that I already had a 9. So I checked the pop report again. Now there are two 9's listed.

Evidently it takes some time for a freshly-graded card to make it into the pop report. I'll check my collection first next time.

  • I've noticed more than one seller say a card was PSA 1/1. After checking the pop report, I let them know of the mistake and most have corrected the eBay listing. In a few cases, the seller WAS acting off of the current pop report, but the report was wrong (I had the other 9).

  • Mike you are 100% correct. The sad thing im sure some know the pop is higher but take advantage of the delay at psa. Others like dsl do so much buiss and always list stuff as soon as they get it from psa i dont think they are aware the pop is behind when they state 1 of 1 or 1 of 2. I to have had the some thing happen to me so i always check my inventory first. by the way if you dont already know check out mikes web site he has some great cards image

Ah, Toppsgun, you made me laugh! Maybe I should stick to just Tony Banfield cards--I'd save a lot of money!

It was an odd sort of disappointment to find that I already had the card. The money was one thing, but I was also looking forward to bumping up my GPA a 1/100 of a point. (My inner voice is saying: get a life, Mike.)

Does anyone know how long it takes for the report to get updated? Next time I get a submission back, I don't want to advertise the cards as 1/x if they're 1/(x+1).

SAME THING ALMOST HAPPENED TO ME

I still think the pop report should be real time.

the pops get updated sometime on monday afternoon. I always check against the seller after the update on monday. I saw a 66 philly from dsl that I knew had been auctioned a month earlier. dsl's pops are always 1 lower except if it is a true 1/1. I don't think they would list it as a 1/0 . I would hope the people writing their listings would realize the irony in that

Yep, I see it often too. I've seen many auctions for PSA 9 1/1 when I know darn well I have one already. Usually it is due to the delay in updating but occassionally it's gross misleading advertising. Some people probably count on some bidders not having access to the pop report and relying on their description.

The Pop Report is updated only once a week... on Monday's, I believe. So yes, there is a lag time. I'm sure that eventually the POP will be real time, but for now it is the system we have to live with.

BJ> Perhaps you can provide some insight as to what it would take to have the pop report updated twice weekly. I don't expect real-time updating, but I do feel it's realistic to expect the pop report to be updated often enough to allow for the 2-3 day shipping time before cards make it to sellers hands.

    BJ,

Thanks for the quick reply. Now I know when I should check the POP report for updates.

Maybe someone from PSA should post a disclaimer on the POP report home page stating the update day (MONDAY). This way everyone has been informed.

Why won't PSA just invest the proper money necessary to get some of the top talent from The Psychic Friends Network so they can update the Pop Report ahead of time?

    David,

    Does PFN have ANY talent?

I think that updating real time would be the only way to solve the problem. I am not positive but this what I suspect the high volume dealers like dsl so to create efficiency :
once they get the grades and before they get the cards back, have an entry person start writing the listings. (you have to remember they are getting 1000's of cards back at once so they need to be ahead of the game) this includes inputting the grades and they probably have a policy of adding the pops on any psa 9 or 10 card that is less than say 5 pop.
the writing of the listing includes adding the link to the picture, probably based on the cert #

they then organize what will be listed and when and schedule the listings

therefore all of their listing is done before the cards even arrive.

once the cards arrive, they proabably have another person scanning and uploading the pictures to the proper links , most likely based on the cert #

any thoughts to this process? I think you have to look at in terms of getting 1000's of graded cards at once and how you would do it. if this is the process then real time is the only way pops will be accurate from a large dealer.

    packcollector,

I don't know what DSL's process is, but the one you described is certainly efficient. We need you to work on PSA's report-updating process!

Another solution would be to delay posting the grades and shipping the cards until the pop report is updated. It's certainly undesirable to hold up shipping, but updating the pop report is important as well.

People pay a huge premium for low-pop cards, and we rely on PSA's report for the pop counts. Not only that, we *pay* for the privilege of looking at the pop report. Perhaps real-time updating isn't possible, but judging by what's written above, the infrequent updates are affecting a lot of customers. The problem deserves some attention.
