Question about 1936 Proof Buffalo's . . .

I have a 1936 Proof Buffalo in a PCGS SATIN holder. The coin really looks more Brilliant that Satin. Is there another diagnostic other than the appearance of the coin that would differentiate between the two?

Doug, the brilliant (non-satin) ones are typically particularly bright and deeply reflective, while the Satin ones are not.

But, I have a little tidbit to share with you. In my opinion / experience, though they are not recognized as such, there are really three types of finishes for 1936 Proof Buffalo nickels: 1) Satin; 2) Brilliant; 3) a hybrid, that is technically a Satin example, but which displays far more flash / luster than the typical Satin ones do.

From your question, I would bet, sight-unseen, that you have a Satin example, but, that it is the type I refer to as a hybrid (#3 above). Even some dealers are confused or fooled by these and wonder why they are not in "Brilliant" holders.

I have had discussions with a number of dealer friends about these coins and I am not the only one who believes that there are three distinct finishes for the 1936 Proofs. So, please don't send me to the funny farm, just yet. Or, if you do, send some of my friends with me.
