Awards given out by the collectors

We have seen the awards that were handed out by the PSA board, however what do the collectors feel about other sets not mentioned? What about that collector that is closing in behind you ? How about the most difficult set to complete in PSA 7 or higher? I believe that PSA is looking for a complete, high GPA to qualify for the "best set of the year." However, I think that it goes way beyond this qualification. Factor in cost, desirability, and availability to give your opinion. I think anyone that goes to the point of making a COMPLETE set from 1952 Topps to 1971 Kelloggs deserves to be mentioned, but be honest with yourself before nominating your friends set from 1976 topps at 8.12 GPA and at 76% complete.
Here are the catagories

1. Best pre-war set
2. Best player set
3. Best test issue set
4. Best 60's set
5 best 50's set
6. best 70's set
7. most difficult set to complete in high grade.

Let's go beyond the point of naming the collectors already named by PSA as HOFers.

  • Test Issue Set - 1964 Topps Giants - thegemmintman

First off, congrats to Robert Earhart on his 1969 Supers set, it is an amazing assembly.

But I think the gemmintman's 9.52 rating for the Giants is just unbelieveable. First the grade distribution for this set, according to pop reports, is about an 8.00. So this set is way above the average grade. And although their are several complete sets listed, only two top the 9.00 barrier.

    8 9 10 All Graded
    5692 1535 80 11588

There are a large number of collector's who are chasing this set, 30+ registered, so that makes the chase even more difficult. A 9.52 is the highest possible rating for the set, so gemmint has no room for improvement in already graded cards. And although his set is hidden, I would guess he owns 40-50% of the 10's ever graded.

    Nice Work!
    Looking for:
    1953 Topps in PSA 8
    1941 Playball in PSA 8.
1952-1955 Red Man cards in 7 and 8
    1950 Bowman in PSA 8

Murcer-Can you expand a little on your choices? Shi*!
Thank you 53kid, I like your choice for a 60's set. The 1964 Giants set is at its highest potential.
I think RGold has an awesome set with the 1952-55 Redman run. Very difficult to find in high grade and has very little improvement left.
The 1955 Bowman Midnight Cowbow set is awesome. Max grade is 8.56 and this collector has a 8.34. Is this mikeschmidts set?

  • id like to give props to R. Clark's 1979 Topps Hockey set. i was #1 for awhile with about a 10% completion, and in the past 3 months he has come in and added an 8.16 GPA, 100% completion set.

if you know anything about hockey, and this set with the brutal blue borders, its truly an accomplishment
  • The53Kid, thanks a lot for the compliment man! Your numbers are dead on. Yeah there isn't anything else I can do with the set right now as there haven't been any new 10's for a while.

It's past time William Gray's 1948 Leaf Football set gets recognized. That set is just brutal, and his 7.88 out of a max 7.91 set consists almost entirely of top pops.

It's on the short list of top FB sets to be sure, as is "Pproerties" 2nd place set of '35 chicles
despite being a whole grade behind the legendary Luchois set.

I'd put Peter Garcia's '14 Cracker Jack set up on the list. Its the only one that's remotely close to complete (it's missing 1 or 2 cards) and has many cards that are the highest graded. It is a much tougher set than the '15's and in my opinion one of the nicest designed sets of all time.
I realize the '54 Wilson set is very tough, but I can't get that excited by someone that grabs the top spot by writing a check for 200K to Mastro to jump to the top. To me there should be a little more assembly and hunting and upgrading and just plain sweat to pull together a top set. Reading a catalog and arranging a wire transfer isn't collecting, it's accumulating.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

All the sweat in the world won't get you a Wilson Franks set even close to that freak (the set , not John) you can get to about 5.5......... but then you're gonna need some knee-pads or ownership of the grading company image

Peter's '14 set is already on my list of world class sets, Shane and I were just discussing this set as an example of being overlooked because the numbers aren't as glossy as the infinitly easier '15 set.

You guys out to quit your belly-moaning and step up to the NM/MT Williams card in Mastro.

  • I am as likely to win that Williams as I am to win either of the Wagners; the wife thinks house payments are more important than cards.

Marc, If I buy it my set rating will be 6.02 and I will be complete.

..........many other things in my life might get uncomplete

Is it worth the 50k (I mean the guy was a Red Sock after all)??

You have to complement the management at Wilson Franks. Given the choice of Mantle or Williams -- they made the correct choice.

  • YES YES!! I agree Marc. There are FAR too few Red Sox in Hot Dog packages. Two in the Wilson Set, one in the Swift Meats set, and none in the Stahl Meyers, Glendales, Esskays, Briggs, Hunters, Rodeo, or Sugardale sets.

Of course the Evil Empire would have you believe that three are way too many.

PS. I would have liked to see Mantle in the set to go with the impossible to find Ellis card.

I'm with you, GR. I can't believe they gave best modern hockey set to a '90-91 OPC Premier set. I realize there's not a lot to choose from in this new category, but I'd take that '79-80 Topps set, iceman's 8.99 '82-83 O-Pee-Chee set or even Chris Renaud's in-progress '01-02 UD Premier Collection set over a 10.0 OPC Premier set any day.

The set was groundbreaking at the time, but in addition to the winner's set (and congrats nonetheless, if you happen to read this) there's three others within a handful of cards of being complete at 10.0. Plus there's another 4.3 million PSA 10's from this set floating around out there, many of which can be had for about 20-25 percent of what they went for a couple of years ago.

Yeah........... He could probably get elected Governor if all the smog, fires, earthquakes, gang violence, tree hugging granola freaks, beautiful people, mud-slides, 8 lane highways or queers don't get him first.
