eBay to Launch New Sign-In Function for Increased Security

In an effort to combat hoax emails and spoof Web sites set up by fraudsters, eBay said it will soon change the way users log into its site. Once the new sign-in function is in place, members will only have one URL they can sign into: http://signin.ebay.com.
eBay and its online payment service PayPal have been frequents targets of identity thieves who send hoax emails trying to trick users into giving out private financial information. Beginning last week, email was sent out to look like it came from PayPal containing an attached file contaminated with the Mimail virus.
It's uncertain how this new sign-in procedure might affect sniping services and other third-party services that do not license eBay's API ? eBay's formal way for companies to interact with its site. eBay did say the change may impact bookmark settings for some members.
Beginning late last week, we began to see an increase in the number of bids that failed with an eBay error message of "Your password is not valid." At first, we thought this increase in failures was due to the fact that eBay has been increasing its restrictions on what it considers to be a valid password. However, we have observed that the message appears even when our users are able to login to eBay using the same username/password combination that we are using to submit bids.
The result is that in about 3% of our bid submissions, eBay is misreporting an invalid password. We have been working diligently on a solution but have not yet found one. This is what we know so far:
(1) It always appears to affect the same exact group of people, which leads us to believe that it has something to do with the specific format of the password.
(2) Other auction bidding sites that we monitor are experiencing the SAME problem so this is not just an AuctionBlitz issue.
If you have been affected by this problem, we recommend the following:
(1) Change your eBay password
(2) Make sure that your eBay User ID is not an email address
We will continue to investigate this and will update you as soon as we have a resolution. We will gladly offer subscription extensions or refunds to those who have been affected--simply contact us at the email address below to make the request.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Customer Support
Hope that helps.
