lets hear from the winners!

I would like to hear from the 2003 winners ...about their sets ..their new goals

and especially how they feel about having the best set in the world.

i myself have never won an award but i hope to one day win one ...i told my girlfriend about my daydreaming of winning one and she asked if there was a money prize if you win...i told her not and that actually you have to spend a lot of money to get a certificate..she laughed about it and made a few comments ...i was tempted to comment on how she could afford to lose 10 pounds! ...but anyways..

lets hear from the 2003 winners!.

    calleocho,

When I was a teenager I enjoyed watching my brother attempt to put the 1972 Topps Football set together. I loved the vertical and horizontal design and bright colors of the inner boarder. A couple of years ago I dusted off a common box of '72's that I had, and sent a few in for grading. In that first submission was card #162 ERNIE KELLERMANN (Returned a PSA 8NQ). One of 2 graded PSA 8 with none higher (tough card). I also managed in my next submission a PSA 8NQ on card #203 TOM BEER. One of 3 PSA 8's, again with none higher. Little did I know at the time how hard these two cards were.

    Other difficult cards include:

    #20 Carl Eller
    #37 Ron Shanklin (1 PSA 9, 0 PSA 8's)
    #58 Ken Bowman
    #71 Bob Lee
#147 Pete Gogolak (Still need this card in a PSA 8 NQ or higher)
#179 Bob Trumpy (Still need this card in a PSA 8 NQ or higher)
    #233 Spider Lockhart
    #262 Ray May IA
    #290 John Gilliam
    #347 Steve Owens IA
#351 Ken Willard IA (Last Card)

After building a good foundation with my set I started picking up some star cards on ebay and at card shows. The prices were much nicer a couple of years ago.

Then it was the never-ending search for those upgrades. I have looked at over 100,000 cards in search of that raw gem that will upgrade my set.

Currently my 351 card set breaks down like this:

    20 PSA 10's
    252 PSA 9's
    77 PSA 8's
    1 PSA 7
    1 PSA 6

My goal for next year is to reach a 9.00 Set Rating (Currently it is 8.84). Below are the cards that I need in a PSA 9NQ or higher:

    1 1971 RUSHING LEADERS
    2 NFC RUSHING LEADERS

    15 JOHN HADL

I must admit, I am very proud of this set and was happy to win the award. We all do things in everyday life that we may or may not be recognized for. But I never see a photo of an employee of the month, frowning. We all like a pat on the back in some form or fashion. Be it at work, home, sports, or in this case card collecting. Believe me...I WILL HANG THE PLAQUE PROUDLY!!!

Although I was new to the Registry(found it in January), I have been collecting the Registry sets that I won for about 5 years now. The competition for these cards combined with the scarcity of some of the others makes it a great challenge to complete these sets. So I am happy to be able to say I have some of the the finest sets in the PSA world. I would be and WAS already collecting these before the Registry was even born, but the recognition of having the BEST among many great sets and collectors is an added bones.

    What I won:
NFL Hall of Fame Rookie Players
    NFL Hall of Fame Players/Coaches/Admin
    Hall of Fame Chicago Bears
    All-Time NFL Receivers
    Super Bowl MVPs
1950s Football Team of the Decade
1960s Football Team of the Decade
1970s Football Team of the Decade
1980s Football Team of the Decade
1990s Football Team of the Decade

    And what I didn't win:
    All-Time Great Quarterbacks
    All-Time NFL Rushers
    All-Time Steelers Team

Look forward to even more FB competiton this year...Congrats to ALL the winners. Anyone putting any type of competitve set together on the Registry knows what type of time, money and effort it takes to have a set that is the #1 Finest set...

I'm here to question, not to inspire or build up. To live how I want, as I see fit,
according to my values and my needs. Nothing holds dominion over me, I stand alone as the ruler of my life.
  • Unfortunately for me the set I love building the most is in a category I'll never win. I love the 1934 Goudey set. In fact, I have two of them on the registry. I started this set in March of 2003 when I joined PSA and found the Set Registry.

That said I did win for my Hockey HOF set which I started about 4 months ago. I have a long way to go with this one before I'm done.

Once I'm done with the Hockey HOF set I'll turn to the Football HOF and Baseball HOF sets. It's a hell of a lot of fun.

There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness"
  • I didn't know team sets would qualify for awards. I didn't register my '77 Yankees until last week. It took over the top spot and I've got my final two cards sleeved up and ready to go west. Too bad. My Red Sox team set did win and that was a pleasant surprise. I hope to finish the basic '77 set this year at better than 9.0 or better but I'm still 94 cards away with no prospects in sight. Two very disappointing vending purchases of over 5000 cards yielded ZERO unique numbers or upgrades...shocking! The "master set" is keeping it interesting though as I've been able to add BK variations and OPC team/pose variations of decent quality of late...anyone got a '77 Dent or Jax BK in NM/MT or better???

For those of you who haven't checked it out, Frank Smith's '75 set has inspired me to be "quality over cert #." That set is a freakin' monster. His 8's are over the top with less than a handful of 9's that will EVER need upgrades. Meticulous, card-by-card set building is tedious but yields some scary lookin' sets in the long run. The best decision I ever made was to use eBay sparingly and do my own submissions. Both from a cost and quality perspective. I'll still whack a low-pop here and there or a card that looks real nice in hopes for an upgrade but I prefer to submit myself--that way I know what I've got.

Good luck to everybody this year obtaining those elusive "special" cards for your sets and congrats to all of the winners on their good fortune and hard work.

I won two awards for the 1971 Topps Greatest Moments set and the 1934 Batter up set. The 1971 Topps Greatest Moments set is probably not going to get any better as there are not any cards graded that could help me. There are a few PSa 8's that I need, but they are in collections that will never be broken. So unless there is someone out there with a nice raw set, I am finished.
The 1934 batter up set was one that began in June of 2002. I really did not start aggressively pursuing this set like I should have until October of 2002. PSa 5's and under were passed on and PSA 6+ were not bid on with much aggression. I regret not doing this because these cards are now selling very well.
My goal for this year will be to start a new set and upgrade the 34 batter up set to a 6.50 average.

  • quick question-

im #1 on the registry on several sets, but theyre still in the beginning stages (just not much competition in the hockey world). to be eligible for an award, do i need 50% or higher completion? if so, i should have an award for my Jacques Plante set in 04

goodriddance189 - For the 2004 awards you need 65% complete to be eligible to win.
  • I did (surprisingly) get three awards:

    1. Pete Maravich Master Set

    2. 1967 Philadelphia New Orleans Saints Team Set

    3. Billy Cannon Basic Set

I say "surprisingly" because the guys behind me are awesome in their ability to dominate a category (Bryant, Museum of Sports History and John Vineyard). I really expected any of those three to snipe me at the last second. Thanks for what may be the briefest of reigns.

I still plan on trying to upgrade my Maravich collection and the Saints sets. Fortunately Mr. Vineyard is letting go of some of his extra Saints & Archie Manning cards - now that the window has closed on the 2003 awards! image

As always, it's keeps being a fun addiction - and the board has supplied more than a few laughs during the year.
Always looking for PSA 9 or 10 Pete Maravich cards!

I think this Registry Award thing is a HOOT !!!

I've had the best time collecting cards and friends since the begining.... As most will know...I collect Kellogg's cards..... Love 'em or hate 'em...It's what I do and enjoy....

Would've had a few more certificates this year, if it hadn't been for those two "K stalkers" trackin' the 'ole KING.....Stump and Machodoc.....Both of them passed me like "Wishes in the Wind.." on a couple of sets that I thought I had a lock on...1972..(Thanks for running me out of town Steve...) and 1982...(You would think with a 9.60 GPA I would be safe, RIGHT???.....WRONG!!! Gee stump...Did 'ya crank up a printing press in your basement and ONLY print 10's???...LOL)

All in all, I did get a few away from the K brats...image

    I won this year for...

    1973 Kellogg's Baseball - Basic
    1974 Kellogg's Baseball - Master
    1975 Kellogg's Baseball - Master ( The best suprise of all 2003 !!! )
    1976 Kellogg's Baseball - Basic
    1977 Kellogg's Baseball - Master
    1979 Kellogg's Baseball - Basic
1980 Kellogg's Baseball - Basic (Stump is ALREADY passed me!! Pace yourself Dave..LOL)
    1983 Kellogg's Baseball - Basic

A huge congratulations goes out to ALL the K Kollectors this year...
....Especially....Steve Wolfe and Dave Jacobs !!!!!
Keep coming after the KING.....It's good for all!!

A few of you know I jumped in the middle of DISCO FEVER this year...

With a dozen years (and you guys thought it was only 1976...) and about 50 different MSA Discs sets produced, in baseball, basketball, football, and hockey, this challange becomes a huge search...I don't know exactly how many "different" discs there are, but would guess about 4000 or so...(just think of the submission feesimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage )....

Best of luck to all who venture into the "Disco Zone"...

I was lucky enough to win a few certificates (maybe I'll wallpaper the kitchen and make it a Saturday Night Fever area...)...

1976 Buckmans Discs Baseball - Basic
1976 Crane Discs Baseball - Basic
1976 Crane Discs Baseball - Master
    1976 Isaly's/Sweet William Discs Baseball - Basic
    1976 Isaly's/Sweet William Discs Baseball - Master
    1977 Holiday Inn Discs
    1977 Zipz Discs

    I'm havin' a BLAST !!!

See 'ya all in the winners circle !!!!

    Best

  • I won 10 certificates. I collect my favorite team: the Pittsburgh Steelers. I love it and that's why I enjoy it so much. I will strive to maintain the Best of any Steelers related set. Here's the sets I won certificates for:

    Terry Bradshaw Basic Set
    Terry Bradshaw Master Set
    Bob Griese Basic Set
    Bob Griese Master Set
    Franco Harris Basic Set
    Franco Harris Master Set
    O.J. Simpson Basic Set
    O.J. Simpson Master Set
    All-Time Steelers Team
    1975 Topps Pittsburgh Steelers

I am in the process of getting the 1971-1980s Steelers Team sets up. I also have 98% of the 1972 Topps Football set completed. I am in the process of updating that set. I collect Hall of Fame rookies, but probably will never complete that set because I just don't get much enjoyment collecting someone I never heard of. Most of the HOF rookies will be 1960s and up.

I am proud of my Terry Bradshaw Master set. I am only missing one card ('77 Mexican) and will be submitting that one in a couple of weeks. I am also very proud of the All-Time Steelers team. I am in the process of upgrading Swann and Webster to PSA 9.

    Jeff
Always looking for high-grade Terry Bradshaw and Steelers cards.
  • I too was new to the Registry this year, having found it in early summer (I think), although I have been collecting PSA cards for 5 years.

This year I won a couple of awards for the 1972 & 1977 Kellogg's Basic sets (I thought I had the 1976 Kellogg's locked up until some joker, er, "King" from the left coast toasted my buns at the last second). I gave the 1982 K set a good run, and just how many sets are there out there where a 9.50 only merits third place? And by the way Joe O. - who says that Kellogg's cards are "oddballs"? To me, oddballs are those strange little paper frisbees that the King has fallen love with!

Anyway, here are my preliminary goals for 2004:

    Topps Sets:
    1972 - I only need10 cards now, nothing below 8.
    1973 - Currently 53% at 8.25 GPA, aiming for 80% done at 8.50 by year's end.
1974 - Currently 73% at 8.44 GPA, aim to finish with a minimum 8.50+ GPA.

    Kellogg's sets:
    1971 - Get to a 9.00 GPA (currently 8.61).
    1972 - Maintain #1 (basic) & get to at least a 9.50 GPA.
1974 - Currently #2 (basic), get to at least a 9.50 GPA and replace Stump at #1.
    1975 - Currently #2 (basic), get to #1 with 100% and at least 9.0.
1976 - Reclaim my rightful place at #1 (watch your 6 o'clock, Larry...)

    I think that's enough.............

I won for my 1960 Fleer football card set. Most of the cards are from my own submissions, and now I'm buying cards to fill in the holes or upgrade. I've waded through thousands of these cards to find ones that aren't off-center, rough-edged, faded, blotchy, you name it. Fleer evidently didn't have much quality control back then. Also, though you won't see it in a price guide, every third card is short-printed, and some of the cards are nearly impossible to find centered.

Most of the missing cards I have in SGC holders, and I'll get them crossed over one of these days.

I have this idea that I'll try to win an award for a new vintage football set each year, but since this is the first year I've won, we'll see how that goes. My best bet would be to get one of my raw sets graded, I think.

I was pleased to win Best Non-Sports Set for my 1962 Civil War News set. This is a great set with terrific Norm Saunders artwork. I remember it came with Confederate money which was so cool.

Most of the set was obtained by grading my own set. I hope to keep improving it to at least an "8" in each card, with as many 9's as possible.image

    I won 3 certificates:

    Marcus Allen Basic set
    Marcus Allen Master set
    All-Time NFL Rushers set

The Allen sets I won with no competition. I'm not sure what I'll do with these sets this year. I'm sure I'll upgrade and fill gaps when the opportunities arise, but I don't know how much submitting I'll do.

The rushers set, however, is very popular, and I was pleased to be able to win it. It is the most popular "key card" set in any sport, with 26 registered sets (14 of which rate 4.00 or higher). Like JasP, I've been collecting these cards for years, which allowed me to pick up some tough low pops with very little competition. This year, I plan to upgrade 4-5 of the cards to go to around 8.50-8.60. I won't be the least bit surprised it that's insufficient to win next year. Hell, the #14 set has a third of the set in higher grades than I do image.

    Joe
No such details will spoil my plans...
  • I won for 2 certs,

Boggs master and basic. I am very proud of them both. Already made some very critical upgrades 1983 Topps and 1984 Topps both in PSA 10 !! Sorry I gotta brag. Congrats to all who won. And to those that gave it their best.

  • I won 14

    1969 Topps Basic
    1969 Topps Master
    1974 Kellogg's
    1978 Kellogg's
    1981 Kellogg's
    1982 Kellogg's
    1989 Score FB
    1989 Upper Deck
    1968 Red Sox
    1968 Orioles
    1968 Yankees
    1968 Reds
    1968 Braves
    1968 Cardinals

Going head to head with the King and Steve has been a riot. I messed up on the 80 Kellogg's and did not register the tens I had. Thats ok it gives Larry something to chase. I look forward to another year of fellowship on the boards and hope we can keep our tempers in check. My goals for this year are the completion of 65, 67and 75 topps sets. also to have my 89 score fb and 89 ud baseball complete with 10.00 ratings. I have 577 of the ud now and 10 sets to pull from. My 89 score is close with 55 more needed.

  • If I counted right I won 12 certificates this year:

Archie Manning Basic and Master Sets
    1968 - 1975 Topps New Orleans Saints
    1979 Saints Coke
    1972 Topps US Presidents

For the next year I hope to finish 1961 and 1970 Topps Football and at least challenge for the #1 spot. I'm at about 85% on 1961 and 40% on 1970. Also just started 1973 Topps Football.

I'm also working on several non sport sets that I hope to finish, though only 1 or 2 may challenge for a certificate next year: 1944 American Beauties, 1956 US Presidents and 1959 Fleer Indian Cards. I'll finish 1964 Giants too, but I won't be close to the leaders.

Gary, I'll keep those extra Saints and Manning cards coming as long as I can find upgrades.image

I won 3 Certificates this year

1927 Churchman Famous Golfers Small size set
1931 Churchman Prominent Golfer Small size set
    Walter Hagen Master set

I am 2nd 3rd to a couple other guys in a few categories who seem to have more disposable income than me....but they are great to converse with about the hobby.

The vintage golf cards (especially graded) has heated up since my article in the SMR a few months ago. Plus I have gotten many e-mail inquiries from people who have either read the article, or have seen my sets on the Registry and contacted me that way.

I am pleased with the registry as it has allowed me to talk to some "new" golf collectors and let me share my excitement for the hobby with them

I am going to try to post scans of all my sets in the next few weeks, will let you know when it is done.

  • Hey Guys, I won 4 certs myself. It will be so cool putting them on my wall. The sets that I won them for aren't nearly as valuable as most of the sets listed but they are priceless to me. Hopefully I'll be able to complete the three sets that aren't complete yet in the coming year. I'll work on these along with my new adventures - 1965 Topps and 1956 Topps. If anyone can help me with any of the formentioned sets, let me know at nbdowney@msn.com - Thanks PSA

YIPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEE! My daughter and I got the Kaline Master Set for 2003! My daughter is elated that her name is up there and I am very very happy as well. Now, to move up and on. Going to be a challenge to complete this set what with the 1961 Dice game (PSA 7's priced at $3-$5000!). Anyway, going to try to upgrade as have everything from 1968-1975 in MINT 9! We will slowly upgrade items and work our way up to a really gemmy set! We have fun just looking at GEM 10's! Again, we won't be on here that much, but would be happy to help any collectors of Kaline in their quest with questions or advice. I have been buying Kaline since about 1974.

One of these days we would like to display not just the PSA stuff, but the PROOFS and Venezuelans, OPC's and all the other odd stuff that maybe a lot of fans don't get to see.....Would like to go to a National in Chicago once again if it happens or maybe right here in MINNEAPOLIS! Anyway, thanks for all the kind comments to date! GOOD LUCK TO ALL IN 2004!image

Congratulations to all PSA Set Registry award winners and HOF inductees. If you are a winner, the 2003 award icon should appear by your set name no later than Friday. If you notice that it is not there on Friday, please email setregistry@collectors.com to let us know. Plaques, HOF trophies, and Best of the Registry certificates will be mailed out in the next 30 days.

This was on the news page...hope that answers your question.

  • << <i>...One of these days we would like to display not just the PSA stuff, but the PROOFS and Venezuelans, OPC's and all the other odd stuff that maybe a lot of fans don't get to see.....Would like to go to a National in Chicago once again if it happens or maybe right here in MINNEAPOLIS! Anyway, thanks for all the kind comments to date! GOOD LUCK TO ALL IN 2004!image >>

    KalineFan,

First, congratulations on a great set!

Second, I am confused by your post - you would like to display the "PROOFS and Venezuelans, OPC's and all the other odd stuff ..."?

I see you have a ton of Venezuelans and OPCs in your set already. The best way to display these cards is to provide scans of each card on your set.

Check out my Willie Stargell Master Set for example. I have scans of all cards including the rare Venezuelan and OPC cards, several of which are the only card that has ever been graded by PSA (some that I submitted myself image).

Oh yeah, back to the topic:

I won for the Willie Stargell Basic and Master sets and the Rod Carew Basic and Master sets.

Hopefully, I'll win the lottery in the next year and win a bunch next October! image

    Congratulations to all!
I am another newby this year. I've managed to accumulate about 30% of the 1629 Topps basketball cards produced from 1969 through 1975.
I won a certificate for the 1975 set, which I am currently sitting at 56% and an average grade of 8.23% . With 330 cards, the 1975 set is the largest pre-1990 basketball set. The second half of the set is devoted to the ABA players, and includes the Moses Malone rookie card. I recently received my first PSA 10 in a submission with the 1975 Bucks Team card.
In 1975, the production quality from Topps improved dramatically from the prior two years (actually doubling the 'PSA 9 or better / submission' percentage ).
    This year my goals are:
    1) to be at 80% or better with the 1975 set.
    2) to be at 100% on the 1970 set (upgrade from 7.5 ave. grade)
    3) to own 60% or more of the 1969 to 1975 cards.

The majority of my cards are actually '70s baseball. I have about 100,000 raw cards from the '70s in about excellent condition.

Best of luck to all in '04.
    Don

  • I thought it was a little lame to get a cert for my Chris Pronger master set. It's a 22 modern card set and i only got 63% done. I got the remaining cards ready for grading except for one hard to find jersey card. Wish they would of waited till i made it a 50-75 card set, 100%. Then i'd feel worthy!
But i appreciate it that the judges recognized it.
