You bring up an interesting coin - the 99(p) Lincoln in PCGS-MS68RD. I have spent a small fortune walking through (yes, at $65/coin) candiates to grade MS69RD. Of course, I generally always receive MS68RD grades (one time even an MS67RD). The coin is still pop 0 in MS69RD. Just last week I spent $195 walking through (3) 1999(p) Lincolns with no success. So, when I sell one at $75, it is nice, but, it is a finest known Memorial cent, so not wildly out of line (if it was a late date Wheat cent you could be looking at close to $100-$200 for a finest known pop like that, as Redcents suggested.

And, of course, the winning bidder will get a spectacular quality coin as well. I can sell anyone a 99(p) in MS68RD with a tiny carbon spot for roughly half that price (just PM me if you want one while limited supplies last), but, a "PQ" MS68RD specimen, like I sell on ebay, is surely worth a couple more bucks the way I see it. image

P.S. The scan of the coin also makes it look far better than it may really be image

Just a side question, you spent the cash to slab a 1999 with a carbon spot image

I slab very few raw coins these days - I mostly buy slabs. And, it is not a rare event that a MS68RD coin can have a carbon spot in my experience - albeit, very small (sometimes, very, very small). By your comment, it appears you find them as distracting as I do nonetheless image

If carbon on a copper coin is damage (and I believe it is) than it is a bit unusual for PCGS to award one with the MS68 grade no matter how small the spot is.
  • braddick,

    I can top that link

Not only was there a carbon spot in the left obverse field of that PR70DCAM, IT WAS ACTUALLY BREAKING THRU FROM BENEATH THE COPPER PLATING & LOOKED LIKE A MINI-VOLCANO WITH 16x MAGNIFICATION!

BTW, they sold? (hit reserve?) it again 11/17 link

IMHO, this should have been sent back to PCGS under their guarantee program OR AM I (emphasis on "I") missing something?

Belivee it or not the 99-p Lincoln is fairly hard in my opinion to make a real ms68 grade. i predict if the pop is in the 200's that 50%-75% of them are really ms67's.

1999 Lincoln cents are worth less than a penny if you melt them,Anyone can buy 100 mint sets from the mint and submit the cents at $15 service and get an ms 69 or at least 80 ms 68's.

    your not missing anything.

Mark: Of course, you are totally correct. PCGS has graded nearly (900) 1999(p) Lincolns (not counting all the coins that do not get in holders or the pop report because they do not hit the minimum grade under a bulk grading) without a single coin achieving the MS69RD grade. I believe I have personally inspected (after purchasing) the majority of the entire MS68RD PCGS population of this date over the past 5 years. From my personal inspection, there are roughly a dozen or two MS68RD coins which are very, very "PQ" for the grade and roughly just a handful that are so "PQ" for the MS68RD grade that they have a claim to the MS69RD grade IMHO (again, from the majority of the entire pop I have personally seen). I believe most of these coins came from the tens of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands??) of 1999 Mint Sets which have already been carefully screened for MS68RD candidates by collectors, dealers, investors, speculators, etc. Of course, there are tons of 1999 Mint Sets which have not been looked at yet, but, it would appear to me that if they can often predict the winner of a political race with 1% or 2% of the vote in, that after 5 years of heavy mint set breaking and submissions, certain information can also be theorized concerning the difficulty in slabbing a certain MS69RD Memorial cent. And, IMHO, a properly graded MS69RD 1999(p) Lincoln cent is a very scarce coin. image
