Any help with this medal?

I posted this on the U.S. coin forum and maybe it should have been posted here(thanks lordmarcovan). Does anyone have any knowledge of this medal. Its heavy bronze and about 1/2 inch thick with a lot of detail on the reverse. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Absolutely beautiful! I have no info on it other than to say it is for/in commemoration of Pope Pius IX. Other than that, I am clueless. But, may I say again. Absolutely beautiful!

    This medal is an awesome work of numismatic art/sculpture. I'm very impressed.

    I can't remember exactly when, but this medal was the subject of a thread many moons ago. Askari will surely remember.
