FLEER WORLD SERIES CARDS

Does anyone know how to distinguish the difference between the Fleer World Series Cards?

The ones that I own have a light and dark blue back. Does anyone know what year these were made?

Carlos-You've got the '70 set. The '71's have brown printing on the back. The '68's (Laughlins) have black and white fronts.
Glad to see you posting, and congrats on the 2 awards!

The color card were manufactured from 1970-80 I think. How do you know these are 1970?

Did PSA mislabel these cards? I have seen some on ebay graded 1970 fleer world series but they are smaller black and white cards and others that were graded 1967 that are color large cards.

Yeah, that was my auction. Someone asked me about that but I really didn't have an answer since I know almost nothing about these cards.

Yes, the one Steve sold was a 1968 Laughlin World Series card not a 1970. The 1968 set was a 64 card, black and white test issue according to the Beckett Annual. The various sets can be distinguished most times by the player appearing on the card. Below is an example of the card and the player dipicted:

    1959 World series card
1968 Laughlin World Series (Larry Sherry)
1970 Fleer World Series (Chuck Essegian)
1971 Fleer World Series (Duke Snider)

    1915 World series card
1968 Laughlin World Series (Babe Ruth-Black & White)
1970 Fleer World Series (Babe Ruth-Color)
1971 Fleer World Series (Grover Alexander)

    1916 World series card
1968 Laughlin World Series (Babe Ruth-Black & White)
1970 Fleer World Series (Babe Ruth-Color)
1971 Fleer World Series (No Player Named)

    Hope this helps! image

  • There are other distinguishing charastics as well. For instance:

    Card Front:
1968 Laughlin-Series Year in a baseball logo without the words "World Series" above and below the year.
1970 Fleer-Series Year in a baseball logo with the words "World Series" above and below the year (as pictured). Blue Text.
1971 Fleer-Series Year in a box with the official World Series Logo. Black Text.

    Card Back:
1968 Laughlin- Series Year only with the outcome of the series.
1970 Fleer-Series Year with "World Series" and a baseball logo in the middle as well as the series outcome (as pictured).
1971 Fleer-Series Year with "World Series" and no baseball logo in the middle as well as the series outcome.

Then there are the updates to the 71 set, through the 77 Series ( total of 75 cards), which are much rarer than the basic set and were highlighted in another thread here. They came after the 71 set was issued but have the same backs and preceded the 80 set . which haveh the Logo backs

Anyone know how they were distributed? Oh, I since scanned the '76.

It's my understanding they were issued in $0.10 wax pack boxes. Is that not correct?

  • Sorry, I was asking about how the Fleer "extended" cards were distributed? The last Fleer - non sticker back - set was issued in 1971, but the extended cards continued until 1978. Mail in?

That's what I was referring to as well. This guy talks about pulling them from packs on his site.

Good input, Scott. I have no idea if it is true, but it sounds good to me, and would help explain why they are fairly rare. Repackaging the same set year after year until the inventory ran out would not likley have caused them to be real popular in subsequent years. I have asked a couple of guys I know who sell a lot of these WS cards if they know anything more.

  • Great link and info! Offering the 1971 set in either 1971-1978 or just in 1978, with respective update WS card(s), seems to be the most logical explanation. If this is so, then finding an extended card in a 1971 Fleer WS pack would verify this. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a way to distinguish between packs sold before and after 1971. How much does a pack or box cost?
