California: What's the deal here?

Okay, I'll really need to get off my I-hate-gold-as-an-investment soapbox. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know who "California" is in the Morgan registry sets? They are only a fraction of a point away (0.05 points, to be exact) from my friend Mike Casper's "New York City Set". Why don't they just do an upgrade and surpass this set? If they wish to remain anonymous, I understand, so please don't divulge their identity in this case. image

BTW, I apologize to everyone if I get too confrontational. I am very opinionated, but have lived through a lot of very hard tragic experiences in my life thus far, and I just want to try to keep other people from making mistakes. I think I will stay out of the gold-as-an-investment argument for a while. Boy, this is almost as controversial as religion and politics! image

  • He has at least 3 in the top 10 now, and he still owns the coins
LOOKING FOR 1931-s merc that is nice for the grade and fb
  • Why doesn't he just sell "California II" and "California III" and upgrade "California I" to try to achieve the best possible set? This makes no sense to me, but, then again, a lot of things don't make sense to me...

California is a good friend of mine. We've spent many hours drinking wine, playing coin show and tell, and discussing his collecting strategy.

I don't think he'd mind me telling the board that high grade, period, is not his objective. Financially speaking, while he can afford pretty much any Morgan he likes, he is adament about quality, eye appeal, and value. He is not willing to go into the five-figure column to buy an MS65 or better example of a key date if an MS63 can be had for one-third the price.

I also have to stress that California REALLY likes Morgans. He has a great eye and he's picky. As a result, he recognizes good coins when he finds them and he often buys them when they are fairly priced. As a result, the longer he lives the more sets I expect he will have.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Thank you, DennisH. I guess what you said doesn't surprise me. Most self-made millionaires (assuming he IS self-made and was not given his fortune by someone else) don't care what car they drive, which logo is on their shirt, or where they live. They are frugal with their money and don't care what other people think. BUT, if it were me, I'd focus on creating one set that is the best set I could possibly assemble. Hey, that's exactly what I'm doing now myself! Check out MY Morgan registry set at the link below! image

I just want to know why he doesn't use the new updated spelling i.e. Kallyfornia.

  • I just had an idea. "California" could donate his #2 and #3 Morgan sets to help the new governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, cover the state's deficit! image
