What's the difference between luster and patina? How might AT affect either?

I'm curious, and I'm looking for answers from you experts, please. I know that mint luster is when the coin is shiny and new from the mint. But is that patina, too? Or does patina only develop with age? And can you have both? Is patina color?

Thanks.

  • Patina is another name for toning - the oxidation that develops on coins over a certain period of time. You can have very beautifully toned and brilliant coins at the same time.

  • Thank you for the clarification, FC57Coins.

Does AT affect luster or patina? In other words, could you tell AT due to less luster, or dull patina?

  • If I have a daughter, I'm naming her "Patina"
  • Patina is usually a term applied to the oxidation that forms upon copper and not silver.
The colors most associated with patina are black, brown, red, blue, or green color.
