MS and proof Sac dollars in top-pop---NOT!

1792-1964 Copper Nickel Silver Type Set. It has 98 coins, so the average cost could only be $200. A few keys will cost a lot more than that for any grade, so the others may need to average $100 each. If PCGS offered a more basic type set (say without 5-6 varieties of seated coins) this would be more practical.

p.s. The Sac comment is not meant as a modern bash--I have a type MS and proof Sac myself. I just couldn't see spending the super high amounts on pop 5 moderns.

    JMOORE,
I have always been fond of Liberty Nickels and Three Cent Nickels and would complete a set in MS and Proof, but I doubt that $20,000 would cover those 4 sets. Sooooo...I would do the obvious and put together an unbelievable set of silver and clad Roosevelt dimes.

    Glad you asked the question.

A Washington Quarter set in 66 (32D & S in MS64). What a great and challenging set. Its been a joy putting together this set over the last 4 1/2 years. It gets better and better with every coin that I add!!

I think a type set with each and every coin in the set some type or another of variety! Overdate, Type 1, 2 etc., with or without this or that, you get the idea.

  • What coin do you really like then that is what I would go for. Why collect a coin that has no real apeal to you.

Thats a good question, is there something you favor or strictly investing. I would select a coin I like and build from there, if I'm investing I would buy 1 coin for that amount a classic rarity.

I could finish my Mercury dime set in MS64 or better, but if I had to start from scratch and build a complete Registry set, it would be the 1933-1947 set of Walking Liberty halves. Total Greysheet bid in MS65 is $20,376, so I might have to settle for a couple of the keys in 64.

I also think Laura's idea of PR64 Barber dimes or quarters would be great.

AN MS Franklin set, but I'm biased- 65/66FBL with a the '53-S being 66 (no FBL) or 65FBL, except the '53-S being 66FBL

Set of V-Nickels in Proof 65- there was such a set at the ANA show in Baltimore for $19,500.

Set of V-nickels in MS 64 or perhaps MS65 (under $20,000?)

The MS Washington quarter set mentioned above is another good one.

Set of PR65 RB,or perhaps even RD Matte Proof Lincolns

Set of PR65 Buffalo NIckels (matte, satin, and brilliant)

    1. A set of proof Franklins - You could probably get near the top 10 for 20K.

    2. A mint state 20th century type set. You would be surprised how great a set you could do for 20K.

    3. I agree with Laura. A set pf PR64 Barber dimes or a set of Legend PR64 seated dimes would be great.

I think I'd have to take the $20k and buy some stock or take a trip. I spend too much as it is.

If I had to buy something perhaps the set that Whitewashqtr mentioned. I don't have a lot of Washingtons and that would be a good reason to get some. If I didn't try for a set I think I'd go after a nice Chain Cent.

Some nice SLQ's would be nice but $20,000 would not turn the trick would it ?

High circulated (VF's+) Buffalo nickels. Lots of appeal and the chase to find some in problem free state of preservation would be challenging. There are a couple of stoppers, even in the VF grade, but $20,000 should take you quite a distance even with the grading fees (you'de have to find many of these raw).

imageI agree with two people because that's exactly what I've done! I agree with Whitewashqtr and Braddick. The trick though, is to put your money on something that will grow in value and has not already maxed-out! The Buffaloes, I have collected for MANY years....the Washingtons I got a good jump on BEFORE they got hot so there's no way I can lose out! image

  • i like the barber dimes and qtrs...you might be able to do an interesting proof 64 set of dimes for 20k..but for a real fun set i would go for a 63+ set of classic commems..50 different designs all low mintage and many of the coins you can get in 65 real cheap..

  • Thank you everyone for your comments and suggestions.

Although $20,000 won't complete any of these sets (but it will give it a good start) I have narrowed it down to these:

Liberty Seated Quarters Basic Set Circulation Strikes (1838-1891)
Standing Liberty Quarters Basic Set Circulation Strikes (1916-1930)
Liberty Seated Half Dollars Basic Set Circulation Strikes (1839-1891)
Walking Liberty Half Dollars Circulation Strikes (1916-1947)
Silver Commemoratives 50 Piece Type Set Circulation Strikes (1892-1954)

  • I think a basic early halves 1794-1839 set would be really cool for $20K. No one has a complete registry set of these yet. image

Edited: Never mind, I just checked, and the 1796 and 1797 alone would break the budget. Just go with a mid grade walking liberty half set, with the 21-D and 21-S in low grade.

Edited: Here's another idea. You could do a moderately high grade Peace dollar registry set!

My first choice will be a Gem 20th century type set.

My second choice will be an AU55 to AU58 standing liberty quarter set. With time, you could build a set as good as many MS63 sets.

My third choice will be a Gem two cents set. You don't need $20,000 to build it. I will go for an MS65RB set (less than $10,000) with uniform surface (no dipped and retoned coins).
