    BJ,

Once again, thanks to all of you folks that make the Set Registry what it is to all of the collectors out there. Your dedication and all the "behind the scences" work is what makes the Registry the success that is truly is.

Also congratulations to all of the winners out there and those that keep on trying to "move up"!

    Hats off to Funky Frank!
  • I noticed that sets will have to be at least 65% percent complete for the 2004 Registry Awards. It had been 50% in 2002 and 2003.

I like that. It forces collectors to continue their efforts if they want to earn honors again. Also, 50% is easy on some sets - especially the smaller player sets.

Congratulations to every award recipient. Congratulations are also in order for all of the other great collectors who keep moving forward and challenging previous award winners - this keeps the competition and spirit of the set registry going.

Good luck to everyone next year.

I was pulling for Ed Clark to win the "Player Set" award. Not taking anything away from Branca, but Ed was able to procure many a Pete Rose card despite bidding against some heavyweights.

    Congrats to all winners.

  • Congrats to my good friend the great Frank Bakka for another year with an amazing set - 1972 Topps baseball. He has not only been the leader of the pack for quite some time, he is also a leader among all collectors. He has always put the other guy's feelings and the good of the hobby ahead of his own. He has been a great ambassador for PSA and the hobby itself. No honor would be too great for a guy like Frank. I wish him good luck in the coming years and I was honored to have been in the same club (the fab five) as he for so long. Neil (Neil B. Downey and Sons Collection)

  • The spirit of competition lives, whether it be one-on-one or against the goals set for oneself.

Thanks to the leaders for setting the bar high.

  • I will keep the backslapping parade rolling along with my hats off to W. Smith for his T205 set which grades out above near mint and it's 100%.

While many of us (me especially) fiddle around with several sets and change our minds frequently, Wendall perseveres with this set and has made it one of the finest accomplishments in the registry.

Am I the only one who looks forward to these awards more than the Oscars and Grammys?

A question to BJ: After last year's certificates were sent out, you mentioned that this year you would ask winners if they would prefer their "real" names on the cert instead of their "screen" name. Should we e-mail you about that on a case-by-case basis, or is there some other mechanism in place to let you know?

    Joe

No such details will spoil my plans...

Great point AlanAllen, uh, I mean, Joe. image

Seriously, I would like to see my name on a certificate rather than the title of my set. Some certificates will "read" sort of ridiculously, otherwise. Does it sound right to issue a certificate that reads,

"This certificate is presented to Duke of Disc-O, 1976 Isaly's Sweet William baseball Basic For outstanding achievement in set building. 1976 Isalys/Sweet William Discs - Basic. Best of The Registry 2003?" image

    Joe & Jeb,

BJ emailed me on Thursday asking... "Is "Carlos Aponte" the way you would like your name listed on the plaque? If I don't hear back from you by tomorrow (Friday), I will assume that this is acceptable."

I doubt that she will be able to do the same thing with the 900+ certificate winners. However, if you email her she may be able to help.

    Carlos,
I'll try to dig up the post, but I'm pretty sure she did say after last's years certs were sent out that she would ask this year.

    Joe,

I do remember the post from last year, but I thought it was because Frank Bakka received a plaque with "FB" on it instead of Frank Bakka. So I thought the post was in reference to plaques only.

I could be wrong, I have been in a daze lately.

I guess I would rather have my real name on the cert...

    Either way,..... .

I'll hang it on the wall of the Disco Room...( 3rd. floor of the Kellogg's Kastle...LOL)..

    Hi all,

Yes, I was referring to the plaque winners as far as the name goes for 2003, but if you would like a different name on your certificate, please email me. There's still time. Just pray that I can keep it all straight!
