My latest Morgan...

...just put me at the magic 90% completion mark for my registry set! This is the point at which PCGS will slab the rest for free! I just got my 1878 7/8TF Strong VAM 37 today, and she is a KILLER coin! I won her on eBay. She is fully struck, has full luster, and has a DMPL obverse. The reverse is nearly PL. Let's see if I can post a pic...

  • That looks like a neat Morgan! Congrats on reaching %90.
  • Thank you both for your kind remarks! This 1878 7/8TF Strong was a really tough one for me! I got outbid on this date/mintmark/variety coin SIX TIMES on eBay -- three times getting sniped! I'm glad I finally have a nice one! I will try to improve my pictures later so everyone can enjoy them. image

  • I hate to be a Mr. Stupid, but what does "Strong" mean...pedigree, die variety,other...?
  • By the way, that's a nice looking piece. I'd say it's a strong addition to your collection.

  • "Strong" means that the reverse tail feather doubling is one of the "strong" 7/8TF VAMs. There is also a "weak" variety that includes all of the "weak" 7/8TF VAMs. I am trying to complete a PCGS registry set, and only a "strong" variety is required in the basic set. What happened is that the Philadelphia mint switched from an 8TF to a 7TF reverse die, and the 7/8TF VAMs show this transition of the reverse dies being reworked that ends up showing as doubled tail feathers. Generally speaking, the "strong" is stronger doubling that you can see without magnification, while the "weak" is a weaker doubling that is more difficult to see. In PCGS' Morgan varieties registry set, you need both a "strong" and a "weak".
