Hey, I Now Have The #1 Open MS Kennedy Variety Set in The Land!

Peculiar??? #1 has a near perfect collection (and everyone who deals in Kennedys knows the couple coins he needs for perfection anyway). Yet, after years of having the set open, the owner has now opted to hide the collection this month??? Is there a strategy there I have not considered?

In the meantime, I now have the #1 Open collection in the land (open - a requirement of the "Hall of Fame" status). Maybe he will forget to open it and I can "steal" a modern Hall of Fame award this June image

(just kidding of course, but, I was curious if anyone sees the strategy of hiding a near perfect registry set after it has been open for years?)

Wow! That's the first time I have looked at your collection coin by coin and you have indeed put together a world class set. it's hard to remember exactly the coins #1 (closed set) has but they are truely phenomenal to be 43 points ahead of you!

Mark: Thanks. It is not "world class" yet, but it is getting there. I sold collectors many of the coins my current is now lacking.

Yes - as I mentioned, #1 has a near perfect set (except for 64(p) and (d) in MS68 and a couple other coins). Not sure why a near perfect set would ever need to be a hidden set? Just curious. image

P.S. Mark - I need a 2003(d) Kennedy in top grade. Let me know when you get one in.

    I can probably get you an 03-p in 8 but no 03-d ms68 in sight. I can't believe there are 8's for 64 p & d - whoa!

The 64(d) is real - I saw it - a monster color coin.

The 64(p) may be the SMS coin which later became an NGC-MS69SMS.

Also, both #1 and myself needed an 82(d) in MS68 (pop 7). There is a good chance those are nothing more than 82(d) GW halves with the wrong serial numbers attached to the coins as something like 4 or 5 coins were slabbed in a one week period earlier this year. PCGS should remove them from the pop report IMHO as we know the chances of a handful of 82(d) MS68 Kennedy Half Dollars being slabbed in a week. image

and the 01-p in 9. Did we decide for sure if that one's real?

DP: As I have mentioned before, I just seriously collect silver Wash quarters and pattern nickels as my two main collecting interests. The Kennedys, like the Roosie dimes and Franklins are collections I "dabble" with because I love the series and want to own nice (not world class) collections. Same is true for Lincolns, silver Commems, Jeffs, etc. where I enjoy owning nice coins (especially 20th century), but have no aspirations for assembling world class sets. For example, I had the opportunity to pick up a 1909vdb Lincoln proof in PCGS-PR65RB last week - a perfect grade for my purposes to enjoy the proof Lincoln series. image

"and the 01-p in 9. Did we decide for sure if that one's real?"

No we have not. I have heard conflicting reports about the existence of the coin.

The Kennedy half is exceedingly difficult to slab in MS69 grade. They should prove very collectible coins in the years ahead in that grade (non-SMS, of course).
