1936 dot cent as mint state ms 63 red

There are presently two dot cents graded and encapsulated by PCGS.One is slabbed SP 66 and now one will be coming up for auction in January as a mint state coin. There are no mint records that show ANY dot cents struck. My assumption is they were made by the "Midnight Minter" at the mint similar to the 1913 Liberty nickel.
How then can PCGS call a 1936 Dot Cent a coin made and intended for circulation ???????

  • I think there is some confusion as to whether the "dot" coins were minted for circulation. Charleton lists a mintage of 678,823 cents - these may have been "dot" coins, or those that were minted in 1937 with the year 1936 (no dot). Given that no circulated examples have been authenticated, I suspect the latter.

But, it wouldn't be the first time that the mint produced coins in a transition year, only to melt and recoin a significant portion of them. There were 8 years where 1921 50 cent pieces were available (mintage: 206,398), and maybe 100 survived. The 1936 "dot" would have been available for only a couple of months, until the 1937 pieces were available.

Me too, Newbie. My knowledge of numismatics is so limited, I have no idea what Stewart is talking about.

By the way, WELCOME to this quiet little DARK realm!!!! Please come again soon.

  • Krause '03 shows a picture and says only 1 possible business strike is known to exist along with only 3 Specimen examples, two of which went for $121,000 and $115,000 in the late '90s.

    bRAD,

The coin that brought $115,000 in the Pittman sale is the coin listed by Krause as a Specimen. This coin is owned by Chet Krause. Now this coin is being auctioned by Heritage and slabbed by PCGS as a mint state coin ???????
