Vintage FB contest summary

Went through the summaries as of today and totaled the following for the major vintage fb sets listed. Trying to see if and where it is still possible to "breakthru". 38 sets total
13 repeat winners (same winner this year as last year).
11 First year winners (set had no qualified sets last year but at least one this year).
8 New winners (last years winner still has set listed but not in first place).
6 Did not defend (last years winner does not have an active qualifying set but another person does).

All in all, only a third of the sets will have two star winners. Most of the repeat winners were on sets from the mid 50's or before. Many races are still tight (within .15 or so) and while I expect the % of repeat winners to go up over time (I believe it is much higher in BB for the same period). Looks like there is still plenty of room to compete on many sets. Newer FB appears to be the wild wild west of collecting with most sets still not having a qualified set. Come on in ......... the water's fine.
Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.

with the creation of the "fear the fuzz" club by vintage redskins, I am sure there are going to less repeat winners next year.

Don't forget about the FB Key Card and FB Hall of Fame sets...Last year only 2 winners from ANY those categories period...This year...14 certificates given in those categories, with tons of new competition...

Luckily I picked up 10 of them, because I will be lucky to repeat in maybe two or three of them next year.. In the Hall of Fame Rookie players set, there are 19 competing sets..The set was uploaded to the Registry in February of this year...That has to be the fastest growing football set out there..

Are there any baseball or basketball sets that have made a such a quick jump in number of collectors putting the set together??

A major shakekup was Stonegate dumping his #1 55 Bowman set and #1 54 Bowman set!

I still cant get over that one.

PS: He is also dumping his former #1 1960 FB set.

    Loves me some shiny!
  • But it was no knock on vintage football, as I also exited (dumped) all my baseball graded sets: 1887 and 1888 Allen & Ginters, 1954 Red Heart, and 1963 Fleer that were also all number one just before the Registry Awards. And, hey, I did keep the 1953 Bowman Set (my only graded set left....). I still think graded cards are fine investments, this is a super hobby, and PSA is a first class company -- just refocusing my time and priorities these days....

    Cheers,
    Kevin

  • Fuzz great research job. I would guess there will be a lot of action on the 70,s sets this year. 1 thing holding them back is the size i think. Most fb collecters are not use to going after 500+ card sets as most 50 and 60,s issues are 150 range or so.Stonegate best of luck to you my friend in your new interests may you find gold in those old ghost townsimage. And packcollector Wolfbear is the founder of the FEAR THE FUZZ CLUB.I am just a charter member imageSO next year we can all fight over 1 of those overlooked sets im sure Fuzz will strike fear in the rest image

  • I am currently on hiatus but have not moved in the direction that Kevin has taken at this point. I regularly take a break this time of year from cards and focus on other hobbies and catch up with the life that I missed during the "great contest push" or least the fall buying spree.

Kevin, best of luck in whatever you pursue and thanks for all the help and support.

Wolfbear, Apparently us having the same hobby interests is apparently a cross that you have to bear. Hopefully I can make it a heavy one. "Top Dog ???" said the poodle to the Yorkie. Just a guy out there havin' fun when I can. But...... if you want to compete, who am I to deny you the pleasure.

Skinsfan, I waited for someone else to do the work as it seems relevant to the energy and $ that it takes to get the top spot on any set. With the $ so high on vintage FB, the 70's and 80's sets, even though much larger, look cheap in comparison. I suspect that they will fill in with a few sets this next year. Maybe I can help there too.

JasP24, Didn't mean to over look your area and meant no disrespect. It is just not an area that I have really looked at much. Though I will admit, I have peeked over the fence the within the last month or two.
Guys, enjoy my vacation. I will. Last year it lasted until June, may be a little shorter this year, will let you know.

Well, JasP24, you finally figured out that you'll lose that #1 spot in the 80's teamimage I'll be looking to take that title from ya next year.image I just started out here too late to even think about competing on anything this year. I only got my subscription in september. Good luck to all on their sets this upcoming year, well everyone except the owner of the 80's set. Here I come.image

Thats cool achtey..My #1 priority is my NFL HOF RC set...The other sets are just a bonus. Looking at what you have so far, you've got a ways to go. So enjoy the hunt, thats the most fun...And we'll see if you can take over 1st by next year.

FYI, I will be at 100% completion with a 9+ GPA by next year, so there's the goal for you to shoot for...

Oh man, don't set the bar so high. Now I'll never reach it, lol. I just love the thrill of posting new cards for all of these sets and letting people look at what I've accomplished. If I'm in the number one spot, so be it but if I'm not, it's just something for me to strive for. I welcome the high bar JasP24.

JasP24 - Looking to start my HOF set this year... not sure I'll be much competition... as I'm just going to peck at it..... but I've been admiring your set from afar for long enough.

Fuzz - My goal is to just get past your set2 and set3 (1966 Topps FB) before you get back from vacation ... and maybe steal a couple of 9's away from Art (just to keep him honest) image I'll be e-mailing wolfbear for my Fear the Fuzz Club application and iron-on T-shirt decal.

Skinsfan - you could really use a vacation too... just think of it.... some tropical island with no distractions (and no computers!) image

  • Mike i have a better idea. Maybe fuzz and i can work it out that i stay active while hes on vacation and i go on vacation when he returns.Heck with the $ we save from not bumping heads we can buy another 100 cards lol.image BUT IN THE MEAN TIME WELCOME TO THE FEAR THE FUZZ CLUB.!!!!
  • Mike,
Good luck on the quest moving up the 66 ladder. Skinsfan will be around to keep you honest I'm sure. I guess that means I should update them with what I have already in house. I only updated the 1st one in Oct. I may throw a 4th on the list here soon. Will have to check and see what's in the box that might be useful.
Last year the vacation was until June, this year I hope not to be quite so long.
Counting hobbies outside of card collecting, I have seventeen other ones that I am active in. There are just some many good hobbies where decent people need to feel the fear that it takes awhile to get around to them all.
JasP, Congrats on all the wins this year. Have looked over a few of the sets and I suspect that we will be seeing each other sometime down the road though maybe not this year as our focuses are still very different. I know you welcome the company.

Well, I have been strictly a HOF/Future HOF RC collector to this point. But as I reach 90%+ completion on it, I am likely to start a yearly set sometime this year. Possibilities being 1957 Topps, 1963 Topps or one of the 64-67 Philly sets. If i go Philly, I guess i will have to join this "FEAR THE FUZZ" club I've been hearing about..lol

  • JasP24,
Come on in, the water is fine. And don't mind those big sharks over there. They are really harmless.
1957 is way down on my list and I only have a few. We might bump on a few stars but that should be it for the next few years.
In the Philly years, I am not around much. I have a 64 set which is coming along nicely. But the shark in that pool is Evanov. It is clearly the easiest of the Philly sets to put together and a nice one is not to bad price-wise (8+). 65 has been FabFrank and I so far and 66 is drawing some real money from several sources. I think RGOLD may prove stiff competition. 67 is all Skinsfan. I have only a few of those and it is not near the top of my list.
63 Topps is a popular set. There are several players there and I do have a bit of a start on that one.
I suspect that we shall see each other several times and I welcome the company.
Might as well jump on those 62 Fleer. That set is over the top recently with folks and card prices are high. Nice set, hard to find, tough competition.
I think if you look though, "Fear the FUzz" is a ploy so that people really don't keep an eye on Wolf and Skinsfan. After all they are some real players and there a few more lurking over there as well.

  • Mike,
Wanted to let you know that after a week or so of "cards in the floor", I have a new and at least moderately accurate list of 66's on paper. This does not happen often. As I eluded too, "Fuzz 4" will be making it's debut in the near future. It is about 70% complete but the GPA is not too good. Many of the cards were graded by Darth and I have some 6's and 7's that look like 8's. Maybe I will have to resubmit. There is a "Fuzz 5" apprently in the works as well. It is about 50% complete but not ready for primetime yet. Not counting the 1 thru 4 sets, I have an additional 143 slabs from this set encompassing 59 cards. I will probably end up with a fifth sometime down the road. I will start updating but it does take some time as you update #2 and then wait for your cards to get released to go into #3 and then wait for #4. It takes about two weeks if #1 is involved. This is a pain. The registry was clearly not designed for multiple sets.
PS. And yes, I am considering the Mastro set. I am on vacation not dead.

FUZZ - No doubt with all the PSA '66's you were gobbling up in the 2 year span that I was viewing the eBay results and the few hundred you bought off of me, you probably could go all the way through to "FUZZ-30" image ...jay
  • Jay,
That is all "Fuzz FB". I have done very little with "Fuzz BB" for the last year or two. But the hundreds of 66 T BB (I don't remember buying any FB but I might have), are still safe and sound here with a lot of their friends. I haven't updated the BB for a long time but am in the process of trying to get a decent idea of the inventory that I have. I have about 400 cards to add to "Fuzz 1 - 3" in BB and possibly put a Fuzz 4 in the top 10 as well in BB. I still have a pretty good share of that market but pc has quite a few as well I suspect. I will get back to it some day in force but not for the foreseeable future.
I do have a nice start on a 66 OPC BB as well. Don't know what it is about that year.
Seems in general that BB has to be a lot more focused and it is much more challenging and expensive to work on 15 - 20 sets at a time and be competitive. So I stay over here and bug Wolfbear and Skinsfan and few of my other new friends.
When I get a handle on the BB, I will let you know. That is what vacations are for. I still have several partial BB sets that I have not even listed yet.
    Any update on PFC Wolt?

FUZZ - Sorry, I should have paid attention, I thought you were talking about '66 baseball. Didn't know you had the same equal power in '66 Football too! Its a shame there was no '66 Basketball, but there is a '66 hockey set, are you making in roads with that too?

Regarding the Marine, ( a Lance Corporal, not PFC) he was aboard the USS Essex during the entire fall stopping off at Hong Kong, Singapore, Phillipines & Australia.
Now he's stuck in Okinowa hoping that he can get back to Hawaii and then fly here for his Xmas leave. He already bought his plane tix, but theres a chance that he'll stay in Okinowa and have no leave stateside. Right now its 50/50, so he's pretty bummed out about it. The wifes pretty pissed to, more so then usual. I keep being the voice of reason stating whenever he's offered stateside leave we will see him, if its later then Xmas, so be it. Then he'll be around longer. Theres also word that his outfit although in the Pacific theatre will be heading to the Middle East after the New Year. We shall see!...jay

    Hey Fuzz,

I bought myself a few 66's as an early x-mas present.... plus I'm waiting on a few minty fresh x-mas presents to come back from grading. I should be updating the set after the 1st of the year..... kinda wanted to see a leap as opposed to just picking off your #2 and 3 sets in small bites. image

You shouldn't really worry about FB cards and Mastro auctions while your on vacation ... we'll all be here when you get back.

Maybe not in the same places... but we'll be here.

    Have fun and Happy Holidays

  • Mike,
Good luck on the submissions. As I think Skinsfan will atest, I have always found that PSA was much harsher on the 66's than I thought they should have been. It is not uncommon to submit expecting a 9 and get a 7.
I think that they have relaxed a bit in the last year. I base that on the fact that 2/3 of all 9's and all the 10's have been graded within the last year to year and a half.
The #2 is updated and I will enter the cards for #3 this week.
Have a Happy holiday and Good Luck,
    Fuzz
PS. I don't mind you passing #3 or even #2, just don't count on me to make it easy for you. I look forward to the return, but I will watch and see how your progress goes.

    Fuzz,

I totally agree with you on them getting a little easier... or should I say more realistic on the grading. Some of my older graded 7's and 8's are beautiful cards that need resubmitting. As for your number 1 set being safe... I'm certain your OK from me on that one. Heck I'll probably have a tuff time keeping up with your number 2 set. I just can't seem to bring myself to punch in 3 digits and hit the button on those 9's like you and Art do. I'll be happy getting all 8's for now.

But I do feel myself getting closer. I watched you snatch that 9 the other night... and had my finger on the trigger for a second.... but with Christmas coming, and life being life, I gotta play within my budget.

But 2004 is a new fiscal year... and I'm trying to readjust my budget to fit in a few. I think I'll call it the Fuzzart budget plan. image

  • Mike,
Watch out for that "FuzzArt" plan. It can be a killer. I have been on the "BeatArt" budget for a year or so and jeez is it expensive. I could afford a girlfriend on the kind of money that it has cost so far.
I won in 11 categories last year (still no paper proof of that yet). I hope to win in even more this year and by far, I consider the 66 FB to be my least likely to repeat.
Just looked at the Mastro set and saw it over 4K with fees. No info on how it matches with my sets so I think I will set this one out and look for a new competitor on the boards in early '04.
