packcollector> Unfortunately, too many collecctors only pay attention to the number on the flip rather than the card inside. I think the Registry feeds this mentality to a great degree. Other than grade, there really isn't anything else that the Registry can use to differentiate one set from another. If grades alone told the whole story, this would be perfect. Unfortunately, there's no way the Registry can differentiate between a set of "Razor 8s" and "Slacker 9s". I feel this is probably the most glaring weakness of the Registry.

  • Not to nitpick, but one of my pet peeves is misspelling the name on a high-profile, top dollar card. Gayle Sayers? Look at the card as you're typing the $#%& description, nimrod. Good thing he's not selling a Dick Buttkiss.

BTW, isn't this the same seller who had such poor grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. in a prior, large scale auction with an auction house? All sorts of theories and apologies on how it happened and how he had every right to be pi$$ed at the proofreader/editor/whatever. Seems he just doesn't put much time, care or effort into his auctions.

As for the card, you're right--extremely weak 8. is that a stain on the left edge or just something picked up in the scan?

  • Doesn't the card look to have a stain on the left side?

To much $ for that card.

    IMO,

That stain is fairly common for the older cards. I think it may me some sort of mildew spot or something. I have seen quite a few 8's with it.

The funny thing is, I got my PSA 8 from ebay not long ago for just over $300. It has much better centering and no stain. I dont think Ive ever seen a PSA 8 Sayers auctioned for higher then 600 on ebay in the last 4 years...

    Whatever....

The last PSA 8 Sayers on ebay...

the stain is pretty common. I just have never seen this card go this high then there is the buyers juice they tack on. I was just amazed. I sold an awesome 8 I pulled from a pack for almost 400 and thats usually what nice ones go for. the card in the auction wouldn't probably reach 300 on ebay! as for the stain, it is pretty common. I just sold a packers team with it, I have a sayers 7 with it on the back and even had a pack fresh 9 with it on the back. the packers and the 9 came right out of cello's with the stain.

Check out the 2 rounded corners on this PSA 8... not to mention the stains and print flaws. This card should be in a PSA 6 holder.

not in defense of the unitas becasue I don't know, but steve's, bbcexchange, scanner does a good job of making things look worse than they appear.
  • remind me to consign to these guys whenever i decide to sell off my collection. every card i noticed is going for more than ebay (esp. the 1982 OPC Gretsky psa 10 for a ridiculous $1040)
  • Hmmm, check out this 8, im selling it on eBay, could it have gotten a 9 ?? I'm interested in your opinions, thanks.....Andrew.

  • Packcollector- That Sayers card is the reason why I need to see a scan on any high dollar card I buy. The card fits the criteria for an 8 (barely), but lacks eye appeal. I feel that card deserves an OC qualifier. Again, too many people buy the grade and not the card.

frank I am with you. for any high dollar card , I want to see a scan becasue there is a broad range within the grade. I use the grade as my starting point and then adjust on how thee card looks. in this case , i don't know what they the buyer is looking at , he's paying a psa 9 price for a psa low end 8.

another example, there is a psa 9 68 mays on ebay that is diamond cut, I looked at it , didn't meet my main criteria which is no diamond cut and moved on. card is probably mint outside of the diamond cut but that is something I won't accept on 68 baseball because there are enough options.

I guess we all have are preferences , personally , I don't mind centering as much but I am not going to pay top dollar for a card that has an o/c look. if that mile high card was 300, I would think about it.

  • if that mile high card was 300, I would think about it.

Even than I would pass. It just doesn't meet my criteria for eye appeal

  • just out of curiousity, are you better off consigning cards to these auctions???? i've noticed numerous cards that are bid up far beyond recent ebay prices....and that's without adding the buyers premium. is this normal for these auctions??

I think I bought a nice card! Maybe I could get it into a 10 holder, yeah sure!

The 64 Mantle was a weak 8 also. Mile High 64 Mantle
Not as bad as the Sayers. The Mantle sold under SMR, with the all American 15% juice, It's over.
