1972 Sunoco Football Stamps

Hi

I recently got my 1972 Sunoco Terry Bradshaw stamp graded. I was wondering if anyone had a nice Bradshaw from that Sunoco set. The one I got came back a PSA 6.

  • Jeff,

I just checked the POP Report ... you've got the only card graded from that set. Not just Bradshaw, yours was the first one graded of any card in the set.

    Nice card!

  • PSA must have changed policy recently. I submitted the Archie Manning from that set not more than two months ago. It was returned ungraded as an issue that they did not grade. I guess I'll submit it again.

I suggest picking up a complete Steelers team sheet,
and then separating the Bradshaw stamp yourself.

There is probably someone here who knows how to separate stamps,
while still doing as little damage to them as possible.

JEFF - Thats funny! I saw your lone Bradshaw listed on that set 2 or 3 days ago. And thought it was neat that they now slabbed it. I then opened about 10 packs (each contains a small sheet of 9) to see if I could land a Bradshaw, Unitas, OJ, Staubach, Starr, Namath etc... I didn't land any that I mentioned, but the few stamps I got incl Riggins & Blount would get oc qualifiers do the horrible centering. So I stopped at 10 packs. To think, about 15-20 years ago i picked up a few cases and had around 5000 packs. Moved alot through scd ads selling 50 & 100 pack lots for like .50 cents per. Would be neat to now open quantity and get a slabbed set, although the slabbing & shipping fees would be brutal...jay
  • If those stamps are similar in quality to some of the sticker sets from baseball and football from the 80s, then good luck getting high grades. Quality is brutal and so is PSA.
  • Jay (or anyone else) - let me know if you run accross a decent Manning. I want to add at least an 8 to my player set.

JOHN - I didn't see any Manning's from the 10 packs i recently opened. If I decide to take the plunge and open more, I'll send you whatever Manning's I turn up...jay
  • Great thread guys. This brings back the memories. My buddy and I had a million of these stamps. We got some everyday after school. The guy was nice enough to hand them out even though I was only 11 and never bought a thing from him. I do have a question. Does the outer cover sheet have anything to do with what is in side? If a Cowbodys helmet is on the cover does that mean there are just Cowboy stamps inside? It's been so many yrs. and so many beers that I don't remember. Thanks!

RW2WIN - I would say no! That the covers were not clues where Namath or a Staubach was hiding. There are 4 different covers showing 4 different generic players, a Cowboy, Dolphin, Eagle & Jet. And when I put a set together years ago in 1 of their albums, I noticed no rhyme or reason where the players came from. So I assume all batches were like the few cases I had...jay

I'm not 100% sure, but the scan I posted above makes me feel fairly confident that the answer to your question is: yes, they do. image

To all those who remember the Sunoco stamps and for those who have no idea what were talking about. Here are the 4 different pack designs...jay

  • I opened a ton of Sunoco packs and never got a Bradshaw. I did get a super nice Staubach, it is much better than the Bradshaw. That one I feel will grade pretty good. The only way I got the Bradshaw was buying an individual stamp on ebay.

I did see a Steelers Team sheet but was worried that centering would be just as bad as the 9 stamp packs.

Anyone know if centering is better on the team sheets? It looks like Bradshaw is on the upper right corner making atleast 2 nice sides of the stamp.
