Change In Tactics... Using Low Grade Place Holders

Knowing it will take almost forever to get my 1792-1964 CNS set to 90%, I've changed tactics. I will now use low grade place holder coins to boost my set completion. I know it severely hampers my average grade (first 2 coins dropped it by 3 points), but if people look at the set contents they will see quite a bit of nice material with dispersed low grade coins.

Originally I wanted to do as many proofs as possible. But I bought a MS Flyer and am happy I did. I'm thinking of buying some AU coins too. Naturally the earlier I go the lower the grades I can afford to buy.
Good luck!
this approach makes sense for a type set in particular.
You get to own and enjoy an example of a particular type perhaps long
before you'll have the opportunity to buy the coin you ulitmately want
to fill that slot. Upgrades are sweet!
Of course, if you end up losing money on the filler coins when you do upgrade,
then from a purely financial point of view, it could be hurting your ultimate goal.
I've been thinking more and more of starting some kind of type set. They
sure look like fun!

Not a bad approach at all.
I also love type sets and find pleasure in being 100% complete and not caring about the registry points, while the set is in transition (until I get to what I want/can afford). I do agree that this may cost a little extra $, but cost isn't everything (unless you get to the top pop coins, then it is most everything).
I love Ike dollars and all other dollar series !!!
I also love Major Circulation Strike Type Sets, clad Washingtons ('65 to '98) and key date coins !!!!!
If ignorance is bliss, shouldn't we have more happy people ??
