Jefferson nickel prices realized...comments?

For the past 12 months or so I've been swamped with work, short on funds,
added no coins to my set, slid to 9th place in the Registry, and haven't been
following the sales, but I did take a look at the Heritage 2003 November Signature
Sale #334 (Nov 10) and a few prices jumped out at me as fairly strong:

1941-S MS66FS pop 17/1 $862.50
1943/2-P MS65FS pop 19/12 $1610
1946 MS66FS pop 14/0 $2070

Anyone have any thoughts on these, or any other recent strong/weak prices in the series?

Any speculation as to how the new nickels next year will shake things up?

  • Ken...As you know the 1941-S and 1946-P are tough dates in MS66FS. Even rarer in non full steps (if rare is the correct word). Combine the pops for non steps and steps and MS66 is difficult. I didn't look but I don't think there are over two dozen 1946's in MS66. Obviously demand drives up prices....only two dozen people can own a 1946 in MS66. The prices for these FS coins shows a demand but how many people were bidding against each other? Congrats to the new owners....new gems for their collections.

I'm not sure about the new design....there where a few threads on design day but they are now all buried. No one really liked the new design and those who somewhat liked them just wanted to see something new. I hope it does bring some new collectors into this great series.

Good to see Solid back on line....

    Enjoy your coins....

I was the underbidder on that 46(p) nickel. I saw it had 5 9/10 steps and I figured I would surprise my customer with the jewel. Turns out his MS66FS is a solid 6FS! Boy, am I glad someone outbid me on the coin. image

There was a 1939 double monticello MS-65FS that went for over 2,000.00! I thought I bid too high on it, but I was wrong!

I, too, was amazed by those prices. Perhaps the Jefferson Nickel
series will be followed by more people in the near-future. Maybe the
top prices for high-grade full step Jeffs will be witnessed in major
auctions, leading to increasing numbers of such coins being con-
    signed to these auctions.

I'd also like to see more interest develop for MS-66/+ Jeffs that
do not have full steps. Several dates are very difficult to locate
with smooth, mark-free surfaces and superior luster. These coins
are desirable in their own right.

I am not a Jefferson expert but it seems high...how many different bidders were there? That may help with the question in connection with the strength of these coins.
