Why is there no interest in '64 & '71 coins?

Comments

  • I love 'em. Got two complete sets of each. No interest in grading them however, or owning any that have been graded.

JAM - There is a big interest in these coins, but as far as the registry goes. PSA has just started grading them, so I'm sure it will be awhile before the registry takes hold...jay

As far as the registry is concerned, PSA has only recently started grading these. I think the 64 is a neat, affordable set. The holders are very cool.

    Jay,
What are these worth? I have a big box of each year I think. I know I have 71's for sure.

GASPIPE - Raw the common '71's are . 50 cents to $1 each. But if they came back as 9's, I would think they would hit a minimum of $20-$25 each. If they came back as 8's, you'll probably break even w/ the grading & shipping fees. But you need a few collectors starting the set to reap the benefits, unless you had star collectors looking for Rose, Seaver, Carew etc... jay

KK - There ae 3 different Mantles, 2 AS (blue) and his regular coin #120...jay
  • It will be interesting to see how the grading standards on these puppies evolve over time. My experience with slabbed coins beginning over 20 years ago, and then watching how standards have "evolved" in the graded card business make me very leery of buying the first generation of any newly-graded commodity.

A 1964 Mantle 9 sold on ebay about a month ago. I can't recall the final price, but I think it was something under but close to $200. I would love to start a graded set of either Topps coin set, but the ones I have look rough and since I have no idea what the criteria are, they'd probably grade low. Since they are a fairly new offering, and most people don't even know about it, it's tough to judge from auctions what the market would be. But a year from now, it'll be going strong.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay

In fact -- some of this board's very own have built strong collections on this "first to grade" mentality with PSA. Most notably, think of thegemmintman's 1964 Topps Giants set -- he was the first one to submit en masse -- and he built a very strong set before the second-comers started collecting it graded. A good way to good.

Next on the horizon? Will Duke-o-Disco fever catch on? Only time will tell!
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
