best way to buy coins

my coin dealer isnt really good with grading since i got a F 1914D for the price of a 1914 D in VF. what people here are very trust worthy and who isnt. I really like alot of people here but that leads me to the other question of who here trades ( that doesnt post on BST?)

I would say the best thing is to learn how to grade the series you are interested in so you don't get taken. I have found a lot of dealers overgrade, and if you find a coin you like you will be more prepared for the decision to buy or not. Buying in slabs is somewhat more safe, but not always. It's also a lot more expensive.

    1. Rare Coins of New Hampshire, Milford, NH (Jon) (high end specialist)
    2. Michael Casper Rare Coins, Itaca, NY (Michael) (silver dollar specialist)
    3. L&C Coins, Los Alamitos, CA (Lee) (everything)
    4. PQDollars, Gardena, CA and Gilbert, SC (Larry and Steve) (silver dollar specialist)
    5. Affordable Coins of Houston, Houston, TX (Jason) (toned specialist)
    6. A.W. Coins, Cornelius, OR (Rick) (modern specialist)
    7. Wade Moore, Selmer, TN (in-person only -- no eBay or web site) (everything)

All but the last one has a web site and/or sells on eBay. Wade Moore can find you the toughest coin you can think of! I got my 1893-S Morgan, 1889-CC Morgan, and 1928-P Peace from him, all raw. They are all now graded by PCGS!

I'd say most people here are good- the people that post a lot especially- if you see someone around a lot, you can probably trust them...

    I second the above, although I haven't bought from L & C in a while.

    Atarian,
You may also want to examine your own grading skills if you paid VF money for a F coin. How did you learn the grade is actually F?

p.s. I agree your dealer is not a great one to deal with if he sold it to you at a higher grade than it actaully is.

Atarian: If you bought that cent from American Coin & Stamp in Clifton, NJ, then I was in that shop about 10 years ago. I bought a few (very inexpensive) things but never warmed up to the people who work there.

Other than the obvious (Photograde, Scott Traver's Coin Collectors' Survival Manual) and encouraging you to buy key (or even semi-key) coins in PCGS, NGC or ANACS slabs, I think you might enjoy going to the local coin shows. There's a smallish one (20-30 dealers) in Clifton and a bigger one (80 dealers) in Parsippany each month. Going to shows is a good way to see a lot of coins and meet a lot of dealers. You'd be surprised how much your grading skills improve when you can practice on 50-100 coins in one day.
