I am not saying this will happen but it could (being a prior Auditor with experience in this area), a stop payment is only good for 6 months from the date of notification to the bank. The banks will honor a check for the day after the stop payment period expires. You are not protected with a stop payment on your check if it is uttered to the bank after the expiration of the stop payment and the bank does not have to contact you to honor the payment. Your backside is still out there
