Merc's: Anyone won anything special today? + Comments!!

Not sure from internet results what was won yet but I do know I really had my heart set out on a couple of nice Merc's only to be well over bidden early on. Those include the 1927-D in 65FB and the 1945 in 65FB. I believe both sold today for record prices. The last '45 sold was for $6900 with the juice (Eisenberg example) I believe this example today sold for over $10,000 even though I can't find it anymore on the site - weird!

Lately, actually for many months now prices realized and actual sales have been well over most of the trends, pricelists and prices realized etc.

I may have won the 24-S in 64FB which I had my sights set on too - a totally original example that looked 65FB anyday but an old fingerprint which in this case and IMHO only adds at this stage to the gorgous eye appeal!
Another one I believe I snapped for an upgrade was a super toned slam dunk 67FB of 1929 image

So your the one who out bid me on that 24-S. I hope you get it. I have not been able to find much lately and have started picking up some raw Roosevelt dimes.

  • I am sure I got the one below. I have this thing right now for ms68 no band Mercs. I have 12 of them so far. There are 92 graded and 36 of them are 1939's. I want to own at least half of the non 1939's. So I figure I have about 15 or so more to go.

BTW If anyone has any ms68 no bands for sale please contact me.

marcmoish: I was the consignor of that 1945 dime that sold for $10350 with the juice. I had another one in the same grade that I just could not let go. This one was supposed to be trade bait for a real MS-66FB 1945-P dime that I want and can't find.

I put an extremely high reserve just to get an idea of the value of the dime before I really sold it. It didn't matter. It sold anyway. I was frankly shocked. I paid $6900 for this exact same dime only 16 months ago through the same auction company. An increase of exactly 50%. Too much, too fast.

Here is the link to the site page that showed the final sale price.

I am awaiting two Joshua II mercs from jbstevens. Maybe they will please me!

    Tony,
I did get that piece image sorry - I really wanted that one - I examined it very closely and I'm thrilled imageimage

    Oreville,
That '45 that sold for $10K was absolutely true to grade - I really had my heart set on it but backed out when it passed I believe $7-8K at least a week ago already - I truly believe it went for very very strong money - not exactly stupid money but very strong - keep in mind there were 10 internet bidders on that piece and nothing from the floor. Shows how much internet action means these days. Like Laura legend mentioned Steve Ivy stated he's got over 2000 internet bidder on this sale alone bidding... wow! Congratulations your probably very pleased, and I'm beginning to feel remorse image

Some of you Merc folks out there may be interested to know a few pieces did NOT sell, and those include the following 19-D 65FB, 19S 66FB, 42/1-D 64FB, and 42/1-D 66FB. All four are in NGC slabs. I've seen all 4 too and all I can say is; they would never cross to PCGS in a million years! Enough said use your imagination.

Hellllo what is with everyone???? Did anyone else get anything? OK, lets try this: If you got nothing any comments on what you wanted to get or dreamnt about? image

    Al,
I'm happy for you looks like that was a quiet attempt at a hand signal as I think that 20 will take you up a notchimage

    Mike,

I don't think Oreveille would go for that 66FB - notice the nicks for starters on the Fasces? Ouch, and that little sctarch on the neck - don't know but I don't see 66 on that one.

Marcmoish: It is clearly a sharper strike than the 65FB merc dime but has more luster grazing and chatter. Yucky yuck!

    I agree,I liked your 65 much better.Al

Oreville's '45 absolutely looked much better - it was a super 65FB example period with very nice preservation. No unsightly marks. Those two coins side by side I'd say DL's is a "nice 65FB" period! , and the other you know image

Oreville is in denialimageimage not to worry you'll get over it !

Those two 21's shown sure shows the sorry state of grading now. Clearly Orevilles coin is superior in my mind. Whats up with the grading now days ? Have the grading services succumbed to all of the collectors clamor for higher graded coins and then put marginal coins in the holders. image

This may not be a merc but it is something I picked up at the sale that I have pursued for 9 years plus. It is a pop 1 coin in MS-66 by PCGS in an old slab as well. The dies were terrible back then which reasonably explains the grade.

    Ken,

Some evidently do exactly that .... you know how I feel about PCGS being so darn tough now on grades and all. I'm Glad!! While everyone is complaining it IS in everyone's benefit that they stay tight and tough. Our PCGS coins, our sets are worth more IMHO in correctly graded plastic. We all know that - whoever doubts that is in denial. Of course buy the coin - but buy the coin with a solidly graded slab and you have truly excellent value.

    Oreville,

If that was the coin you mentioned earlier to me - I love it. Not an expert on those at all - but it has your name all over the dang gemimage

Hey Marc I didn't realize that 66 I posted may not really be a 66. It's in a PCGS holder so it has to be. Anyway I hope PCGS prices stay high too. Now if we can just rely on them to be consistent too. image

Fess up time. Nothing won in the main auction but......9 coins won in the Bullet Auction. Nothing mind boggling at all though.

I know I'm not working and have sold some of my set but shucks they were pretty. image Oh yea, the wife thinks I am a hopeless idiot when it comes to Merc Dimes.

When I was logged in I could not find this thread at all. I logged off and then I could find it. I wonder what the deal is with that.

I wonder what this 29P is really going to look like. Lighter for sure I suppose.

Congrats on the latest acquisitions Marc. The '18-D and '24-S sound like they're super coins. You're safe from me for the time being; I don't have any Mercs in the pipeline. I did add a couple of Walking Liberty's tonight - a couple of MS65's that I bought cheap back in 1969-70, and just had slabbed. Not bad for a $12 initial cost.

I think we should be looking in our rearview mirrors at the new kid on the block. The Lexington Collection debuted at #17, but it has a '16-D in 64FB, both of the '21's in 65FB, and lots of 67FB coins. Some of us could be looking at his/her taillights before long. Maybe he/she will introduce himself/herself to us, and become a participant here.

I just realized that Lexington set too - yup your right that is one heck of a problem we've got here ya knowimage....hey if your reading this mister Lexington you gotta clear this with miniumum 10 out of the top 20 sets to be admitted without any harrasment.
........Dimageimageimage..........business aside I would welcome him/her too so lighten up and come outta the closet!

    Hi Mercateers!

I was able to snag the 1925-D PCGS MS64FB in the after auction bargain sale. This will be a big upgrade from my AU-55 dime.

I've been watching the Lexington set across the street for a while. He's really doing it the right way, buying the tough ones first. Welcome to the boards Lex!
