Another "Holy Grail" "made"!

I was just checking the pops on the c.s. Washingtons and noticed that the first MS67 1962-D was made. This leaves only four of the regular issues that have none graded that high... the '32-D&S, '55-D and '61-D.
Man!, some of those "later" "D" mints! image

Congrats to who ever! image

  • Don- The 62-D is a really tough coin but speaking of a "Holy Grail" I am surprised you did not mention that a pop 1 34-D MS67 Washington was also made this past week.

MS68 is right. There were some super Wash quarters slabbed in the past 10 days - most notably the 1932(s) in MS66 (pop 3), 1934(d) in MS67 (pop 1), 1937 DDO in MS66 (pop 2), 1962(d) in MS67 (pop 1), 1954(d) in MS67 (pop 3). It is nice to see some neat coins being made. image

  • David:
The '34-D in 67 is way over my head. That's probably why I missed it. I feel lucky to have an MS65 in my set and wasn't aware of the pops of the higher grades. The '55-D, & '61-D are apparently also tough in MS67. Do you think that an MS67 '55-D or '61-D will ever be "made"?

    Mitch:
Congrats on "making" the MS67 '54-D! That's at least two of the three you made! image
I'm sure that you are "hard at it" in trying to do the same with a '55-D and '61-D! image
As you stated, it's nice to see some tough coins being made even when members are citing how tight PCGS is lately. image

Don: Thanks. The 54(d) is a challenging coin to say the least. RG made the pop 1 coin- I did confirm that today. I have (3) 55(d) I think have a shot MS67 (just like 5 other guys, including BZ). I also submitted a 1961(d) for shot 67 today and it came back MS65. I can't tell you how many $65 expenses I have absorbed trying to make a 61(d). At this rate, I could have spent $10k on that pop 1 coin (if it is ever made) and saved money image

collect all high grade Washingtons also Washingtons double dies, overmint marks and RPM's always buying
  • Don- I think that a 61-D should be made in the not to distant future. The 55-D could take quite some time. PCGS does not like to grade Washington quarters MS67 that do not have booming luster and I have yet to see a 55-D that has that characteristic.

Bob Z - That 34-D is the best I have ever seen. I will bring it to Santa Clara for you to see if I change my mind and come up for the day on Thursday. I am leaning toward putting it away for the time being as I have always had a penchant for key date finest known coins.

  • Well David, you were right. Somebody recently "made" an MS67 '61-D. It doesn't show-up in the pop report yet, but it does in the registry sets. Congrats to the lucky "maker"! image

I also noticed that the pop for MS66 '55-D's and '62-D's have gone down. Thanks to whom ever decided to turn in the tags. Looks like these "D" mints will continue to be tough!

I was looking at the Patrick J. Mullen Quarter Set and the pops show 1 MS67 '61-D (He has an MS66). Is that a recent change?

What has happened with the pops of the 1961-D quarter since 2003? I do not have my pop report with me

"What has happened with the pops of the 1961-D quarter since 2003? I do not have my pop report with me"

Robert: Still pop 1/0 to this day. I had to outbid one of the top 19th century classic coin upgraders in the country to win that particular 1961(d) quarter at public auction that then slabbed out at the PCGS-MS67 level. From memory, I think that coin fetched between $1,000 - $2,000 at auction (before slabbing MS67) where a typical MS66 1961(d) traded at around $200 at the time. That particular classic coin upgrader later mentioned that he was only outbid at that particular level at auction as he had no idea what an MS67 would actually fetch at auction (I wouldn't have stopped bidder either though). It fetched around $12,000 at auction shortly thereafter when sold in the PCGS-MS67 holder. Even though it remains pop 1/0 to this day - I do not regret selling the coin - I had bills to pay at the time and a very nice MS66 undergrade coin in my collection to fill the hole until the day I am able to slab another.

Oreville - thanks for the trip down memory lane.
