How can someone verify 1964 SMS coins?

the coin guy a few miles from me says he has a raw 1964 SMS Lincoln. We had been talking about them several months ago, so i suppose he felt he needed to give me a call.

Before i go look at it, is there a definitive way to tell if it is an SMS or not? I tried looking on Teletrade and Heritage for pics, but the pics didnt really help me. From past posts here, everyone seems to say the strike is good... is there anything else? I have an SMS Jeff from 1994. Would the quality or strike be similar to how they made those??

thanks
michelle

Michelle, DO NOT buy an alleged, uncertified 1964 SMS coin - there is too much downside risk. If the guy really believes in it, he shouldn't and wont sell it a low enough price where you're not taking a big gamble.

It's too hard to try to coach you through it, in a non- face-to-face way and dangerous for you to rely upon any other means. Most people haven't even seen one before and I would include myself in that group, had I not been at NGC when a few were submitted years ago.

Let the owner get it certified - then deal with him.image

While it is entirely possible he has one, it is unlikely. I'm guessing less than 6 have been certified and the number minted is small and unknown. It's certainly a poker match you have. He thinks he has one and will charge accordingly. Heritage NY Signature is selling a 1964 SMS PCGS 5 coin mint set this weekend, including the cent. As of right now, the internet bidding is $17,500. Lot #9514.

I completely agree with Mark. There is no way in hell I'd consider buying one raw since the odds are infinitesimally small that he actually has the real deal. I also find it more than a little suspect that you were recently discussing the coins with him and now he magically has one.
