Need some information on this...Jeton?

Does anyone on the forum have any information on this piece. Because of the obverse portrait and legend, I believe that it's a Jeton, but I haven't been able to find any information on one with this particular reverse. It's also strange in that most of the others that I've seen with this obverse legend have had dates somewhere on the coin. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill

Which Louis is it? Louis XIII, the Sun King?

    It's pretty cool.

I think that it's Louis XIV, but I'm not 100% sure. I think that the reverse refers to something "from above".

Louis XIV was the Sun King. He was also The State. And this looks like him, I believe. Louis XIII looks a bit different, less fat and haughty. Perhaps the arrows somehow symbolize his affinity for being connected with the sun?

I like this token a lot!

It is in fact a jeton of Louis XIV. It's a stock jeton from the period between 1679-1715. It dates to approximately 1691 according to Mitchiner. The reverse legend probably means something along the lines of "security from above." Many jetons from this period bore the dateless obverse with LVDOVICVS MAGNVS REX as yours does.

Yours is a particularly nice piece.

I like the jeton and these can be very collectible. I tend to buy these if they are priced right and in a high grade. I am still learning about these too.
