Submission results, PCGS must think I am Mad Marty's red-headed step-brother

I received my submission results for my 4 freebies for reaching 90% completion on my Merc set. Not good.

The 1930-P I figured as a lock 65FB and a good shot 66FB.

The 34-D was looked at my me and two others on the Merc registry sets and none of us saw any signs of PVC. Should have been at least a 65FB dime.

The 28-P was IMHO a lock 64FB with a good shot at 65FB.

The 24-S was bought in an AU-58FB slab from fellow board member Grip. I studied this dime for weeks and thought it was at least MS63FB, so I re-submitted it. Came back with the same grade but no bands.

I hope ya'll will please pardon me while I go throw up!

Wayne

They have been tough on Mercury Dimes lately!

    I know how you feel.

Only Lately ? PCGS seems to be tough on the Mercs most of the time. They loosen up on the later dates but when you submit a earlier date Watch Out. Clearly this looks to be the case with this submission.

Got to watch those pesky slide marks or hairlines on the earlier dates. image

Frankly I hope they stay as tight as hell, (well except for Wayne) and most of you probably do too!!

    Wayne,

Sorry you had such disappointing results. I've hit the 90% mark too, so I guess I'd better look at any Mercs carefully before submitting them. I'm considering sending in a '23-P (graded MS65/65 by ANACS back in the early '80's, when they issued photo certificates), a '27-P and '28-P purchased over 30 years ago, and a '31-S. My eyesight was better then than it is now, so I hope I do all right with them. I want PCGS to be strict, but it seems that if a coin is on the borderline of 2 grades, you can count on it receiving the lower grade. That works to our advantage when buying coins already slabbed, but it sucks when your entire submission comes back lower than expected.

You've made some impressive additions this year, and have a set you can be proud to own.

    Hi Jim,

Thanks for the kind words about my set. My difficulty in grading is being able to determine between a weak strike and minimal wear/rub. This is a real problem with this set as you know. The wear and weak strike both show up at pretty much the same points. And the borderline PCGS decides between in my case is MS65FB and AU58. It's not like I don't have the PCGS graded coins to compare to! I thought I had done my homework. I had two other board members look at 3 of the 4, and we were all pretty much in agreement as to what they should grade. Maybe I need to go get my eyes checked! Maybe I just need to wait 30 days and re-submit them? It's a crap shoot!

It is pretty obvious to me that I need to continue to buy graded coins, as my grading skills are no where close to good enough to try to find raw bargains and make them myself.
