AWARD MONTH

I think it would be awesome if PSA would announce winners of the 2003 Registry awards in the same fashion that baseball announces its award winners (One or two per day, not all at once).

For example PSA should release the winners in this order:

Nov. 7th Best Non-sports Set of the Year
Nov. 10th Best Regional Set of the Year
Nov. 11th Best Overall Specialty Set of the Year
Nov. 12th Best Topps Specialty Set of the Year
Nov. 13th Best Player Set of the Year
Nov. 14th Modern Set of the Year (1972 to present) Mics.
Nov. 17th Modern Set of the Year (1972 to present) Hockey
...and so on

Ending with the Hall Of Fame Sets Last.

This will allow a day of discussion for each winner.

Just a thought.

Carlos

I don't have bottomless pockets and I won one last year and should get 4 this year. Granted, 10 years from now it will be the same names at the top of every set, but for now, it is possible. I figure I'm good for a few awards the next few years. image

I'm content knowing that I will eventually be passed in most of the sets that I collect. My goals are just to complete sets in high grade ... if I win a few awards along the way, cool!

If you really want an award, try collecting something less mainstream that is not currently listed on the registry and getting it to >50% complete by the end of next October. It can be done.

Are you collecting unpopular, oddball issues that you don't even like just so you can get a registry award? Seems silly to me. It's just a piece of paper.

    No. What do you collect?

I am. Myself and MS asked for player sets years ago just for the paper.image I figure I will remain # 1 forever.

  • James,

Thanks for that response. Based on that, I'll modify my previous response:

I am collecting several player sets, and yes, some of the cards included are cards that I do not particularly care for (1968 Topps Baseball comes to mind - worst set ever produced in my opinion - just plain ugly). But, as a player set collector, I feel that no set can be complete without these cards.

pcp8210 intended to provoke something other than a positive discussion regarding player sets, but it actually brings up a good point: do you collect every card of a player, or do you pass on the ones that you just find repulsive?

Personally, I collect them all regardless.

Oh yeah, as far as that "piece of paper" goes, I really couldn't care less, but it's a nice gesture by PSA.

Again, pcp, what do you collect? Are you so ashamed of your collection that you can't log in using one of your more recognizable IDs? image

Virtualized, please do not take it upon yourself to decide what my intentions were/are. I simply found your advice to Duner rather puzzling. I do not understand how a silly piece of paper could/would motivate someone to purchase/collect items that they are not interested in. I was not referring to a player set where someone might not be interested in a few cards, but gets them anyway to complete it. I was referring to the advice that you gave - where you recommended that Duner should start an unpopular, oddball set that he probably has no interest in - just so he can get a registry award.

<< <i>Again, pcp, what do you collect? >>

I collect Benjamin Franklins. And, if it weren't for low self esteem guys like you (virtualized) who *need* a silly piece of paper in order to feel like a real man, my collection would be much smaller. image

<< <i>Are you so ashamed of your collection that you can't log in using one of your more recognizable IDs? >>

This is my only ID. Ashamed of my collection? I probably would be if 95% of it consisted of $0.50 - $2.00 commons inside of $6.00 - $8.00 holders. image

    How do you get this

out of what virtualized said up above. Seems to me you are trying to pick a fight. Jeb is being the better person by ignoring what your true intentions are. Its obvious you are trying to pick a fight by assuming what his statement means.

    Hey Carlos,

I don't think that its a bad idea. But, I think that a shortened timeframe like maybe 3 to 5 days would be in order for all of the awards.

    Jeb,

I understood exactly what you were saying. Yeah - definitely a way to get an award. And hey, as long as YOU personally enjoy collecting that set the award is just the icing on the cake. I do that with the 1972 OPC Baseball set - the smaller, tougher Canadian cousin to my 72 Topps Set. Not nearly as popular as the 72 Topps - but MUCH tougher to find AT ALL let alone centered with sharp corners.

    pcb,

JEB was trying to be helpful to someone that felt there was no way that they would ever win an award. I didn't see anywhere where he talked about collecting something that you don't like in order to get it. "Something less mainstream" was what was suggested. Things like Post Cereal would be a way to go right now since PSA just started grading them. Last year, you could have done that with some of the Kellogg's sets until their popularity skyrocketed.

Yes, it might seem silly to collect a set simply to get a piece of paper with your name on it. But heck! We're mostly grow men still collecting baseball cards. There has to be some silliness in that too. So, whatever floats your boat!

I feel terrible that I've come to the point where my hand is forced to sell off a set of close to 2 years work.Only 47 cards to go to 100%.However,I'm looking forward to a couple pieces of paper to remember the work and fun put into it.

Anybody who goes crazy set building on the registry wether in first place or last deserves to be honored and it's a very kind gesture by PSA regardless of the motive any setbuilder has.

Just keep in mind that before the registry existed we collected without the interest of being # 1 or whatever. If PSA wants to give you something for it,it's just a bonus to the joy of collecting a registered set.

    Good points.

Now how about a little reverse spaming. I missed your 67 auctions as I was out of town. Could you send me an email at djj99@aol.com and let me know if you have anything left that would fit into my set.

    pvc,

You obviously don't understand the idea behind the set registry based on that statement. You basically took a shot at every collector of Topps sets from about 1967 to the present considering that the majority of cards in each of these sets are commons priced at below $2.00.

And don't forget, some of these "$0.50 - $2.00 commons inside of $6.00 - $8.00 holders" will sell for $50.00+ thanks to the set registry.

That's not something to be ashamed of.

pcb8210- welcome back, what took you so long ?

Also, you might want to consider buying some friends with all the profits you've made off of us suckers,
because with your attitude, your funeral, with ALL your mourners gathered together, could still be held in a phone booth.

    Bye-bye ... punk !
