1972 Topps Baseball At 96%

Having reached 96% on this set I wanted to thank several Board members who were a big help to me along the way, including Neil Downey, Erik Jarvi, Alan Cowart, Mike Castaldi, "The King", and Frank Bakka. I'm sticking to PSA 8 in general due to the size of the set, and I'll probably hover around 8.02 or 8.03 when the dust settles. Now the hard part begins as the hunt is on for those real toughies, like the Schaal IA, etc... I'm not quite to the point of bounty-hunting, but it promises to be a big challenge.

    Good luck Steve!

I can't believe that you've hit 96% so quickly. I think that it was almost 18 months before I hit that point! Great job!

Great job Steve. It feels so good to get to the 90% mark, but not as good as once it is complete. Best of luck and keep it going.

  • Nice job, Steve. I'm almost up to 3% myself on this set - Look out! image

I know you've been busy this week, but email me when you get a chance ... we have some unfinished business. image

    JEB.
  • Thanks everyone - that last 4% will be a bear. BTW, I forgot to give a tip of the hat to Levi and the crew at 707.

JEB - Let's shoot to wrap up that other thing tomorrow. Sorry for the delay. Now that I am safely re-elected I can exhale a little and focus on the really serious stuff!

  • Steve,

Steve> The last 4 or 5 percent definitely can be a bear. It just depends on which particular cards make up those remaining cards.

In that regard, I do feel fortunate to have built the set once. This time around I've tried to make the remaining cards as easy and generic as possible.

MIKE - I like your game plan. I remember reading about your strategy several posts ago, where you stated that you would persue the tough cards first and get them out of the way and bottom feed the rest. That makes sense and if the tough cards cannot be had, then you won't hit the wall several hundred cards into it. ...jay

Jay> I think it just makes finishing the set so much easier. There's really only two cards where I've pretty much had to take a "whatever it takes" attitude. With one of them, I believe I established a record price paid for a PSA8 common from the 70s.

    Mike,

Any time you'd like to break that record - I have a few PSA 8 commons that I'd be willing to part with. image
