What is a common ??

For the current set special, I have a silly question, "What is a common?"
I have called PSA twice and gotten different answers, neither of which seemed correct. So I ask "What is a common?".
So far, "anything not in the SMR" and "Use your best judgement -- or send them in and we will decide" neither struck well. Yes, those really were the two answers.
For example, I have a 66 OPC Rose. Not listed in SMR. Common ??? Probably not. Will they grade for a common price ? Doubt it. If not, where is the magic list ??
Seriously, this is ridiculous that this isn't clearly defined anywhere I have seen and what I have heard doesn't seem Kosher.
Any help???

Fuzz - this has been hashed over a few times,
and a card's individual listing in SMR is the answer closest to definitive that there is.
Still, the SMR changes every month, so depending on which issue you look at, even that would vary.

From my experience, and most agree, that there exists a bit of fudge room,
so let's say commons in 8 book for $ 20.00 in the SMR,
and your card is individually listed at $ 30.00 in the SMR, then it's probably close enough to be considered a common.
If SMR lists it at $ 40.00, then it's probably not a common.

    These are just general figures.
Use your own best judgement, and unless you really abuse the system, it seems to work.

  • DITO WOLF FUZZ.I have used the 2x common price rule as a guideline and never had a issue.Of course if you send in 66 football they want like 200 per card so never submit 66 topps image FEAR THE FUZZ!!!!!

    hey Fuzz
wolfbear's guide is pretty good. I have not had a problem with the common guidelines. for example, 64 philly, smr is 16 for an 8, there are alot of semi stars , rookies, play cards and hof's listed just over it by 5 bucks or so. never had a problem. I think if I dropped in a bart starr then I would be pushing it. like wolfbear says, if you are not abusing it then you should be ok.

the entire 1934 batter up set is listed in the smr.
certainly non hall of famers are commons.

Geez I dunno, them batter-ups seem to be getting pretty uncommon image

    fashionable..........yes,................ yet oh so affordable.
  • 1987 Topps baseball #248 Gene Walter-- Nominate your most "common" card here...

I agree with the latter response from PSA...use your "common" sense.
