need help requesting a master player set

i'm sure this has been discussed before, but i couldnt find a thread on it. what are the steps in requesting a master set of a player (specifically Guy Lafleur, i dont want to bother with a basic set because of PSA only adds topps cards, whereas i want the OPC cards and league leaders to be included too)?

ive heard you need to submit 3 serial numbers for cards included in the set, which i can easily do. i also compiled a list of all regular issue (including LL, HL, AS, etc cards) cards up to his retirement. should i submit this list, along with suggested grade weights? or should i just submit the 3 serial numbers and let PSA determine which cards should be included? im sure that there are some cards from his playing days that have not been graded yet, so i have no idea how they'll deal with those.

he also has several non regular issue cards such as the 1977 OPC Glossy insert. are these included as well?

thanks for your help

I would suggest sending whatever information you have to Gayle and BJ. This will help them alot tremendously, and will shorten the time you'll need to wait before seeing your set online.

As far as what the contents of the Master set should be, it will include EVERYTHING (Topps, OPC, HL, LL, you name it). Pretty much any card which PSA has graded which has the player on it will be included in the Master set.

    Hope this helps.

I think the master set is only made up of cards that were graded at the time of creation, and then when new cards are graded of the player, you have to email BJ and let him know that they have to be added. But I might be wrong.

You are almost entirely correct. You can only include currently graded PSA cards in a master set. As additional cards are graded, you need to request that they be added to the set as they are graded. In the past, I have requested cards to be added after I have submitted a previously ungraded card. I emailed the invoice # from my submission to BJ and the card was added.

Also, to initiate a new set on the Registry, submit a spreadsheet with proposed weighting for each individual card. This will get your request processed much quicker.

Josh, the only other suggestion that I could make would be:

Instead of emailing BJ and letting him know that cards need to be added to a set, you may want to email her! image

    Hopefully you have been enlightened.

  • thanks for yalls help. i guess ill have to get access to a pop report, since i can only account for the cards i own being already graded. should i weigh the cards based on pop reports, or "book value?" some of the cards im sure have low pops, but i bet its more based on a lack of cards being graded, than actual scarcity.
  • Will,

I'd just weight the set based on your specific knowledge of the scarcity of each card. Ultimately, it is up to Joe Orlando to weight the set, and any suggestions will move the set up on the list.

SMR in PSA 8 is a factor, but a lot of current sets are weighted incorrectly, imho. For instance, most player sets (baseball - that's all I collect) have OPC cards listed with a lower weight than the Topps version. Granted, the demand for the OPC version is generally not there, but the scarcity of these cards in high grade should have some weight.

For example, with the 1975 OPC #70 Mike Schmidt, I paid about 14 X what I paid for a 1975 Topps #70 Mike Schmidt in PSA 8.

Again, there are only several set builders that will go after this card at that amount, but that really shouldn't discount the weight of the card. I guarantee that the next 3 (or more) times that this card is offered on ebay (or any other manner), that it will sell for a significant premium over its PSA graded Topps counterpart. Only 4 of this card have been graded PSA 8 and only 1 PSA 9. Compare that to 248 PSA 8 and 10 PSA 9 graded for the Topps version.
