1843 Penny Token

The 2x2 I got this in is marked:
New Brunswick Canada
Charlton # NB-2a
Breton # 909

I do not know if this coreect but if anyone can let me know I would appreciate it. I just want to make sure it is labeled correctly.
The photo is very close to the actual coin. It is just a little darker and makes it look better. I had just a little too much sunlight in the photo.

Terry....... thanks a lot. I guess I should label it KM#2..... Would VG( be too high to consider for this token?

VG would be a conservative grade. Some would give it a Fine. VG10 would be good. image

After a longer look, I'm going with fine.

Thanks for the info... It is appreciated. I don't have a Charlton, I have no idea what the Breton reference means and I also wanted to show off another older ship of mine..image

    Thanks for the input.

Anyone think this should go into some olive oil?

British grade F/AF Fine / Almost Fine. Note the reverse has almost lost a legend.

That is nice newbie, if you get it too clean for it's age and wear, I believe it would look unnatural. I wouldn't clean it anymore than it is.

Exactly.. but it is just the typical crude that hides the "one", if that is what you mean.

I think the reverse just suffers from a weak strike.

I'm not sure olive oil would help it. Whatever verdigris that it has on it is deeply ingrained and even if you were able to get it off, there would be underlying corrosion, not to mention the possibility of harming it trying to remove the verdigris. I'd just leave it alone.

    Yo newbie;
I have a passing interest in Canadian tokens, and have maybe 10-12 in my collection - NOT this one though. I do have the Charleton catalogue, so here's some info. from that 1995 catalogue: Copper, 17.6 gms, 34.1 mm, medal axis, plain edge. Breton 909. Minor variations exist due to retouching of the dies, based upon 2,3,or 4 stays to the right of the mizzenmast (what's the mizzenmast?). VG 5.00, F 10.00, VF 20.00, EF 50.00 AU 125.00, UNC 275.00.

Virginia Frigate token, I'm paraphrasing. New Brunswick unsuccessfully tried to use British coinage. They then entered into an arrangement with William Hammond of Halifax to procure 1/2 penny and penny tokens, but the Colonial Office said no. Somebody went ahead anyways without telling the Colonial Office, either N.B. or Hammond. They were struck by Boulton and Watt. and serruptiously went into circulation. Matrices and punches were sent to N.B once the coinage was complete. England didn't find out until 1853, when a new governor was appointed.

    Newbie,

    That piece looks familiar image

I grade it VG+. Some would grade it Fine. The Charlton Millennium edition lists VG @ $5C and F @ $12C.

    So where's the 1/2d?

I have one in about that same grade, but holed. On my vest.

Living in the city of Brunswick, it was mandatory. I was happy to find a holey one. image

Yours looks like a textbook VG to me.

I had an unholed one as a kid, way back when. I think it was also a VG, maybe Fine.
