shipping charges

I almost stroked the key on a book from France on the Franc until I noticed (luckily) that the shipping charges were $23 Euro on a $19 Euro book for a total of $42 Euro! Isn't this a tad excessive, or am I way out of touch? Do some of you run into equally high shipping costs on your orders?

I can understand the ones who insure or register their shipments, but what chaps me is the $5.00 shipping charge for what is effectively a $1.00-$1.50 mailing and packing job. If one has the necessary supplies at home, such as padded envelopes and stamps, there is little excuse to be charging huge amounts such as that.
In the case where someone might have to drive 20 miles round trip to a post office to have a postal worker handle a special shipment, it may be reasonable to charge $0.35-$0.40 per mile, since that is the standard reimbursement made by companies for driving your own car on business. Usually, I can combine that process with my day-to-day activities, so it's a non-factor.
I once had a seller attempt to charge me $4.50 per coin to ship three coins to me. I negotiated the price down substantially. The coins turned out to be polished. I demanded all of my money back and got it. The seller still stinks though (and if you're are the seller and are reading this...good!! I hope you have changed your evil ways).
And don't forget those sellers who charge you for their TIME to sell, package and ship the coin to you. I'd bet some of them think they deserve making $20/hour while selling to customers.
