Submission values

I'm wondering how the rest of you handle the valuation of your cards when filling out submission forms. Do you use SMR as a guide and if so, what grade do you use? Does it matter? I often wonder if I place a lower value on the card than it might actually grade (to keep the overall value down & thus, my shipping costs), it might affect the grade given. Is that nonsense or does it even matter? I sometimes use a combination of Beckett and SMR and some of my own opinion as to what the card would sell for at a show.

I use the price I would expect to get for the best grade i feel the card has a shot at.
  • For modern commons (under the modern bulk submission), I put a value of $5 for each card. For vintage, I usually submit less (i.e. well under 100 cards) and just list a value that I'd expect to pay for the cards in PSA 8. For example, I recently sent in a vintage submission of less than 10 cards. If you look at the postage & handling chart on the submission form, the difference between declaring a value of $101-$500 ($13.50) and declaring a value of $501-$1000 ($14.50) is $1.00. So I valued each card at $100 which is well over what the cards would sell for in PSA 8, and paid $14.50 s&h.

    Hope that helps.
