VTS - Germans at war

First, a note on the VTSs in general:
All threads with the VTS heading are simply a community trophy case. The coins posted here don't have to be in perfect shape (as you're soon to see from me).. the point is simply to display coins, medals, etc with a unifying theme. It would actually be a benefit to see the same coin posted twice or more in different conditions so that it may help readers in grading. Also, a VTS is not meant as a one time thing. Another purpose of these threads is to serve as an easy reference for the Krause-less ones. If a VTS already exists for a coin you have (just search "VTS") but hasn't been posted to in a while don't be afraid to revive it. We'd all be delighted to see more.

So, the rules are: there are no rules. But please, don't post a pic alone.. tell us what we're looking at. If you can share a grade estimate and average values, etc this could become an impressive tool.

Today's VTS: Germans at war
Hopefully no one takes offense, this isn't meant to play on a stereotype. This VTS is for all coins, tokens or medals commemorating a German battle/war. Propaganda pieces are welcome as are simple circulation coins, as long as they are a bit more significant than the average mark or kreuzer. If there's sufficient interest, maybe next week (or whenever) we could start a thread for the French at war or anyone else.

My starting contributions:

Baden 1 kreuzer 1871 - Commemorating victory over France in the Franco-Prussian War
Unk mintage, this one graded by dealer at VF - Refs: KM252, Jaeger88, AKS141 - Paid: €3

Baden gedenkkreuzer (1Kr) 1871 - Victory at Karlsruhe, Franco-Prussian War
Unk mintage, XF - KM255, J93 - €15

Here's the scarcer mate to Jester's "Iron Times" token. Since the 1st Soldiers Relief Donation campaign was so successful, the German government decided to try it again later the same year. This second donative exchange did not fare half so well, so this "Kameraden" token was not very widely issued and is rather rare. Made of blackened cast iron, this 34mm medal was also designed by Prof. Heinrich Hosafus.

A much more attractive WWI medal was Lauer's Wartime Bread Distribution Medal. A 33mm sterling silver medal, it was issued in 1915 to remind the German people of the Kaiser's generosity in distributing bread rations in the face of the British blockade. While the British government railed against the uncivilized Huns' sinking their ships with the resultant loss of civilian lives, they had no similar compunction about inflicting hunger on the German civilian population. As usual, the people suffered and the leadership didn't.

Hmm. I thought this was gonna be a thread with a bunch of crappy WW2 zinc coins, LOL.

    I was pleasantly surprised. image

  • Spoon - if you are serious about that Jersey coin, PM me your address and I will send you one. I know that I have multiples of the George Vi obverse and I might even have multiples of the Elizabeth II obverse (since the coin was actually minted with both obverses). If I have both, I will send you both, if not, then I will send you a George VI obverse.

I too have (or had) one of those Jersey pieces lying around, but as I recall, it was a later Liberation commem with Elizabeth's portrait.

Useless pop-culture historical tie-in: I am pretty sure the Nicole Kidman ghostie flick The Others is a period piece set in Jersey in the late 1940's, just after the Liberation. I seem to recall some references to it in the film, though why they chose that setting, I don't know- the story was not really a historical piece and would have worked in any setting. It was an interesting spook film, if you like such things. Not really a "horror" film but more a ghost story.

Askari, that's a neat medal (Ich hatte einen Kameraden).

meLord, I didn't know the film "The Others" was a reference to the Jersey Liberation. By the way, I was deeply offended by how the film has the heroine misquoting the Bible, and this is especially bad since she's depicted as a "religious" woman. I suppose that's to be expected of Hollywood (and I suppose Kidman couldn't care less, being a Scientologist), but if people are to get their interpretations of the Bible from Hollywood, I pity them.
