Very happy with submission grades....but, a question?

The grades were posted Thursday for a recent submission of mine through the CC Special. I was extremely pleased with the results and very excited, especially the PSA 9 1959 Bob Gibson rookie. I really did not expect a 9.

First, I wanted to share it with all just because I am so happy about it. It is invoice #9013879 and my zip is 85331.

Secondly, the reason I wanted to share it is to ask a question about something. This was my first shot at grading 1961 Post Cereal. I have the complete set and I submitted some of the tough ones. Notice that on the Mantle and Shaw cards in the grade column there is a N0. I have no idea what that means. I called Customer Service and the person I talked to didn't know either. She asked someone else what it meant. They said that the card is encapsulated as authentic but with no grade. She also said that they are still learning on the Post cereal???

Both cards, in my opinion, were about 7 quality. So why would they indicate a N0 on the card? I can not find where they define what N0 means. PSA did not adequately explain why this non-grade?? I would appreciate input from anyone who knows more about N0.

thanks!
Don

    Grats on the Gibby!

As for the Posts, since those were only available "hand cut," PSA will grade them as authentic, but will not give them a numerical grade.

Edit: nevermind, I just checked your submission and saw that they did give number grades to some of your other '61 Posts. I'm at a loss image

No such details will spoil my plans...
  • Mariner,

My guess is that if PSA believes your POSTS are too short, or somehow appear that they were only recently cut (akin to trimmed), they may reject them as non-gradeable or authentic only. I'm not sure how they could tell the cards were recently cut if in fact that was a basis for their decision. I bring it up because a handful or so of complete box back panels were sold on Ebay recently. While I for one would consider it sacrilege to cut the cards from those panels, I suppose others may disagree, and some awfully nice cards could be presented for grading.

Seems PSA is still grappling with its approach to this issue, which will also present--even more so-in the Hostess issues. In my opinion, SGC has not got it down on the POSTS either. I have found they ignore or at least downplay toning, yet jump all over minor if not almost imperceptible stock problems. That is why I'm sitting on my POSTS for awhile, until I get a feel that the grading standards are to my satisfaction. I submitted a '61 Spahn, McCovey and Mays to SGC some time ago and got a 50, 80, and 84 respectively. The Mays was clearly the worst of the three, although I guess I shouldn't gripe that the most valuable of my submission was the one that pulled the NM. Anyway, the Mays was shorter than the other 2, and had some light toning on one end. The Spahn was exceptional--I am not kidding when I tell you I was certain it would pull a 92, and would not have blinked if it pulled a 96. It was snow white, almost oversized, and without defect. I examined it under black light, 40x magnification, and saw nothing wrong with it. It got a vg-ex. There were no @$@$*&*#$ wrinkles in it anywhere. Fortunately, when I broke it for resubmission a month ago, someone broke into my house and stole it and others, so I won't have to anguish over whether it would have regraded higher (note sarcasm laced with anger).

Anyway, keep us POSTED-pun intended- on how your cereal cards continue to grade, if you have more.

  • PSA has very strict rules grading hadcut cards. If the card is cut even a little bit too small PSA will grade them as authentic, but will not give them a numerical grade.

Off on another topic, you must live right near me. My Zip is 85382. I live about a mile from the Mariners/Padres Stadium in Peoria. If you go to shows a lot, we would probably recognize each other. Small world.
  • Wabbitwax,

What shows do you go to? I live in 85012 and I rarely see any decent shows in the Phoenix area.

    Wabbitwax and Curmudgeon....

Small world indeed. I live in Carefree. The only shows I go to on occasion in this area are at the Phoenix North Baptist Church. I actually find stuff there now and then. Marty from All Marty's Stuff sets up there often and usually has some great cards. I see him on this forum at times.

Off the topic, but email me at brett8@cox.net if you like.

  • mariner,

Any of those cards on that invoice for sale or trade? I'm interested in about 1/2 dozen of them.

Just a few of them are dupes graded for sale or trade. Send me an email with the ones you are interested in and I'll let you know. Most of them are for my collection and the registry.
