The postal workers went on strike.
The coal miners were always on strike.
The rubbish collectors went on strike (that was a fun one - the city smelled 'orrible).
The railroad drivers went on strike (bloomin' ASLEF).
The power went out on a routine basis in the winters because some group would shut the country down.
