First PCGS submissions: Major thrill, major agony

Yes, it is exciting! I sent in a number of freebie submissions and a few for fee on October 10. I just received notification that two of them were finalized. Each had a major thrill, and each a major disappointment. First, my "newbie" freebies:

1 21380542 1954 1C USA PR67DC imageimageimage I thought it was PR 66DC. imageimage Up goes my Lincoln registry set!
2 21380543 1970 10C No S USA PR68CA image about right, had a chance at PR 68DC I thought.
3 21380544 1951 25C USA PR64CA imageimage This is a "tumor" variety which I thought was PR 66CA. I'll have to take another close look.
4 21380545 1940 50C USA PR65 image I had hoped, but not expected, it would make Cameo, but I guess not.

The 1954 1c is a major thrill!!!!!!!

Next, a 90% complete freebie:

1 21380559 1940 5C USA PR66 imageimageimage PR66 is right, but I really, really think this coin is cameo.
2 21380560 1956 5C USA PR67DC imageimageimage Exactly what I had hoped for! Up goes my Jefferson registry set!

When the coins get back home, I'll take a good look and see what I can learn.

Very exciting!

Sorry, but I predict you will learn nothing from seeing the coins (i.e. your opinions won't change).

  • Those are super results. I'll bet very few of us have made DCAM Lincolns and Jeffersons from the 50s. Those are very tough. Yes a cameo 1940 anything would be even more impressive, but you did just fine. I would really like to see images of the 1940 coins if you have any.

  • Thanks all. And another of my submissions is posted:

1 21380561 1950 25C USA PR67 imageimage I had expected PR66 and hoped for a Cam, but it was a reach. PR67 is quite ok.
    2 21380562 1952 25C USA PR66CA image As expected

    Date Received: 10/10/2003
    Date Shipped: No Date Specified

Both coins had been in older PCI holders as PR66 Heavy Cameo before visiting NCS. The frost on the 1950 was a bit less than on the 1952 and the "cellophane toning" on the 1950 didn't clean up as well. All and all, I'm happy with the results image

    Redcents,
uhhh, the 1954 1c and the 1956 5c are the major thrills. I enjoy my thrills! Besides, I've already updated my registry sets image Thanks.

Good job on that 54.....aren't the DC wheaties just the coolest looking? That deep red copper color with the frost........ image

  • You know I was just kidding. I knew you wouldn't want to sell it but if you ever do .... image

BTW, congratulations on all the cool makes. image

p.s. I do beleive I can help you advance your set even further if you'd entertain some trades.
  • GaCoinGuy,
Yes, particularly the early ones. The late 50's wheaties and the memorials have a very "soft" dcam look, while the 1954 and other early 50's dcams have a "sharp" texture you you can almost feel with your eyes image

    redcents,
My "thanks" was/is for your kidding in a positive way. I appreciate it. And yes, my Lincoln set could use a little help, particularly in the years that count: 1950, 51, and 52. My plan had been to try to cross my NGC's for those years - 67, 66, 66, all Cam; I don't need to cross the 1954 anymoreimage, but for now I've decided against that. I'll see what becomes available. Perhaps after the first of the year I'll re-evaluateimage And I also plan to reduce the "breadth" of my collecting to free up funds for my preferred sets. Hopefully before the end of the year, but there's a lot going on right now...

  • How does a 50, 51, & 52 in 66CAM sound?
