Perplexing E-Bay Situation What would you do???

segojasegoja Posts: 6,141 ✭✭✭✭
Sold two proof sets the other day on e-bay (a 53 boxed set and a 54 in capital plastic). Customer used the Buy It Now function and paid via paypal immediately. He has a confirmed Paypal address.

I always check the feedback of any new customer, so I did. He has a feedback rating of 29 with one negative. Most all are buys, the negative is a sell. (apparently never shipped the item).

The catch is that he is no longer a registered user.

Apparently right after he bid, he apparently deleted his membership.

Sent him two e-mails in two days asking for a logical explanation. No response!

My dilemma is a follows: Do I ship the coins he paid for assuming the deal is good. I see risk in that he is no longer a registered e-bay user, and would presumably not fall under their jurisdiction. He gets the coins and decides to tell Paypall some concoction about how I ripped him off. Paypal debits my accounts, he has my coins and his money.

What would you do???

Thanks!

If I have the money for sure then I would send the item.

Send them insured with a tracking number and signature required for pickup. If you want, send an email to PayPal (and copy yourself) telling them what's going on.

But he paid, so he gets the item.

I'd wait for him to contact me before shipping the coins.

And when I did ship them, they'd go with signature delivery confirmation.

  • Send the coins with some kind of tracking, ins, reg, sign rec.
That way he can't tell Paypal he did'nt recieve them and force a credit from you.

Either refund the money or send him the coins. Flip a coin. But I would send him the coins.

Is there any way to find out (from eBay) why he isn't a registered user? I don't envy your situation. Since he is not answering your e-mails my gut feeling is that you should refund his payment and inform him that you can't complete a transaction with anyone who not a registered user on eBay.

Even with signature verification, if he files a chargeback, PayPal will snatch first and ask questions later. But, as long as you can prove he received the item, you will eventually get your money back. It's simply one of the risks of doing business, and one that I deal with every day in my regular business. I've had bogus credit card chargebacks filed, but since I ship everything signature required, the slimeballs have never been successful.

  • By accepting PayPal, you've agreed to their terms of use. By offering the "Buy It Now" option, you are agreeing to sell to the first person who puts up the money. These items are bought and paid for.
I'm not telling you what to do, but I would hold up my end of the transaction, and then reconsider how I listed my future auctions.

  • I would send him another notes stating that he is not a registered user and therefore you need to confirm with him he still wants the deal. If you do not hear from him you will void the transaction.

I can think of a dozen reasons not to have high capacity magazines, but it's the reasons I haven't thought about that I need them.
  • Send insured tracking signature required, but do send them

    Jody,

I don't understand your comments! BIN is just an option (yes it's my choice to have this or not). Had the customer bought via a regular bid the situation is identical. That's the e-bay model, not how I listed the coin. If there is another option, please let me know!

By withdrawing as a member during a transaction AND not answering e-mails certianly gives anyone (including myself) to be somewhat suspicious.

I'm just playing it cautiously and using this forum as a sounding board to see if anyone has encountered a similar situation!

  • The no longer e-Bay registered would certainly bother me, but since he evidently was registered at the time of transaction, it doesn't look like you have a choice....but definitely go with the sig req'd delivery.

  • segoja,
I understand your concerns, and I don't blame you at all. It's just that the BIN gives you no chance to see who you're dealing with, and therefor no chance to cancel their bid. All your points are well taken my friend, and I hope you know that my comments were ment to help, not critisize. Good luck.

    Jody,

I'm with you! I take them as such!

I jsut think a BIN seems to work, but for some reason my last two forays into BIN on proof sets have come up lame.

    Your point is well taken!

    Thanks for the feedback!

  • He paid - you ship. The insured value of those proof sets is high enough, a signature is required. I think you will do fine.

The set's will go registered mail out to the cleint. Combined value is close to $500, but I'll send them registered anyway.

That'll force the signature, and if the client plays games, then I guess I always have my proof AND can claim postal fraud, which is pretty serious on registered mail!

Thanks to all for the feedback!

    Just a weird situation!

  • Should you decide to withhold the merchandise given the current situation, there's some comfort in that as a no-registered user he can't leave you negative feedback. I think.
  • In addition to all the above excellent advice, I would make sure I had good pictures of all the merchandise shipped and also the packages after they are wrapped and addressed. IMHO

  • So he no longer is registered with Ebay. So what?? He paid for the coins.
Why are you now worried about him running a scam with Paypal?? He could
have still run the same scam if he was still registered with Ebay. It isn't like
he had a long feedback history to defend. You wanted to sell, he wanted to
buy, he paid, you ship the coins. Regardless of his status, I would get proof
of delivery for $500 in coins.

  • Get his phone # through e-bay if contact will make you feel better.
  • Just make certain you send it to his "Verified Address" through PayPal and you are covered. You don't have to purchase items through E-Bay to use PayPal....You can send cash to anyone as long as they are verified through PayPal.
