what coins he may have had

William Callister, a croaker from consumption,
Had his daisy-roots stolen by his dhobi wallah.

Where did William live, what was stolen, and what
coins might have been in his pocket at the time
Of his death.

Well, the "where" is India, Bombay (modern Mumbai), I believe. The daisy-roots reference doesn't ring a bell, though.

Good man askari; India is correct! (Afghanistan would have worked too)
I was reading up on Indian coins when I came across an article on British Military terms and slang which I found interesting-language can be so much fun...
Croaker: a dying person, a corpse; or someone who has given up
Consumption: pulmonary tuberculosis or any other wasting-away disease that "consumed" its victims
    Daisy-roots: boots
Dhobi wallah: indian who did the washing
Coins:anything from the late 1800's such as 1/4, 1/2, or 2 anna, 1/4, 1/2, or 1 rupee, doubtful that he would have had a 5 or 10 gold rupee in his possession.
