Do you think PCGS will/should Certify Proof Sets in One Holder?

I noticed NGC has started certifying complete Proof and other coin sets in one holder and it looks like a neat idea to me. Has anyone heard if PCGS might do the same thing? I like the look of original proof sets with mint packaging but always worry about the possiblity of environmental damage to the coins.

I would like PCGS to follow with a similar holder.
There are some sets that would be very appealing in one slab.
Were they to implement something, I would also hope that the
fee(s) would be something less than NGC.

Capital Holders has been doing this for years. That was fine. When the services start slabbing whole sets with the same grade, that kind of bugs me. Goes to show how arbitrary the grading for a lot of that modern stuff is.
Pick a number out of a hat type stuff. My opinion.

I'm not sure how many sets have ALL the coins with the same exact grade, designation.

    I hope not because.....................

    1) I will have to wade through the threads about, will this set cross? Should I crack this set out?, etc.

    2) Someone will invariably state with 100% certainty that NGC coins are one half to one full grade to high compared to PCGS. Of course it will come from someone with a lot of money invested in the registry. image
  • will ???...probably
    should ???...no
  • What I got from reading the announcements and the rates on NGC's site, right now the only way to get the sets is by sending in existing NGC holdered coins in matching grade. Kind of like a reholdering option. The fees are steep though. For coins valued under $1000 the cost is $8.50 per coin ($42.50 for a five piece set) coins over $1000 are $12.50 each ($62.50 for 5 piece set). Coins graded MS or PF 70 are a flat fee of $40 per coin ($200 for five piece set.)
  • I think it would be neat.
I would like to have a Morgan 1878 variation set, all MS64 or MS65 in one of those nice slabs similiar to the new NGC one. Then after it was slabbed I could even get that slab framed, or they could create a little stand to put it on and display it.
It would look really nice IMHO.

There's no way PCGS will miss the bus. If they price the product reasonably, they'll get to reholder tons of material without the grading expense. How much does the plastic cost, $2? So many sets lend themselves to this kind of grouping, war nickels, varieties, type sets, mint sets, proof sets, etc. If I read NGC's release correctly, they currently only accept previously holdered coins of the same grade, but are moving toward seperate grades and labels for the individual coins. NGC's idea is quite good. IMO, they've mispriced the product. It'll be interesting to see this play out in both camps.

Actually, the point about matching grades was asked right after the sets were seen on ShopAtHome....where they first were shown (Worldwide exclusive image ).
What someone said at that point was that they do NOT have to be all matching grades (which, is distracting to me since you make get MS66, MS67, MS68, MS68, and MS69 all together....blech!).
So, maybe when things settle a bit, you will have the option of selecting 1 holder for any/all grades or, if they do not match, 2nd choice would be separate slabs.

I think for a birthyear set, or something to that end, it could be cool. Similar to what Capital Plastics does, as has been pointed out already. But, for the collecting/value standpoint, I will prefer original USMint holders (my proof sets right now) and NGC/PCGS slabs for my individual coins (Morgans, etc).

They must have a market though, for them to come out in the first place, and then to have enough people asking about them.....

Absolutely, they will. And why not? More options for collectors is a good thing.

I don't know if they will or not, but one coin per holder is enough for me. If you want all your coins in one holder send them across the street.

This is interesting to me because I just purchased a 1953 proof set in consectutively numbered slabs from our own Quarterjack. He submitted an original
53 proof set which is my birth year. I was quite pleased to get it. Thanks Dave.
